Careers Report

Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses are accredited courses run by local Registered Training Organisations (RTO’s) such as Federation University, Skillinvest, Horsham College and Longerenong. These courses are offered to secondary school students and can be completed as part of the student’s educational pathway. VET courses are run each Wednesday throughout the school year and provide students with an opportunity to gain industry based training and develop hands on skills.

In order to assist students to choose which VET subject they would like to enrol in, the Wimmera Southern Mallee VET Cluster will be conducting “Try VET Day” on Thursday the 4th of August 2022.

Prior to the Try VET Day, students will be required to submit a list of their top three VET course preferences. These preferences will be used to assign students to two “taster” sessions. In most cases, students are assigned to their top two preferences.

Students are able to choose from the following courses:

Automotive

Building & Construction

Community Services

Dance

Early Childhood Education

Electrotechnology

Engineering

Furniture Making

Health Support

Horticulture

Kitchen Operations

Music

Plumbing

Salon Assistant

Screen and Media

Sport and Recreation

*Please note that there is no guarantee that all courses will run in 2023. Only courses with enough enrolments will go ahead.

On Try VET Day, students will be transported to Horsham where they will participate in the taster sessions run by the RTOs that deliver VET training: Federation University, Longerenong College/Skillinvest and Horsham College. Students will either walk or catch a bus from the Horsham College bus exchange to their taster sessions. There will be a morning session and an afternoon session providing the opportunity to try two different VET courses in order to help students decide which course they would like to complete.

Students will be required to choose which VET course they wish to study in 2023 and submit their online application via the VET website – vet.llen.com.au by the end of term 3. Please note that courses that do not receive the minimum number of enrolments will not run in 2023. Applications open on the 10th August.

An Induction Day will be held on Wednesday the 26th of October 2022. Students will be expected to attend this day.

Agribusiness Scholarship

Encouraging young Australians to choose a career in agribusiness …

Each year, Agribusiness Australia awards a scholarship to encourage young Australians to undertake tertiary education in agriculture.

This year’s scholarship is now open to receive applications from eligible students.

Students who are studying this year to enter university in 2023 to study an ag degree or a degree where they intend to establish a career in ag, are welcome to apply.

Our Silver member, Prime Super, is sponsoring the scholarship again this year and will announce the winner.

This $3,000 scholarship is part of Agribusiness Australia’s key priority of encouraging students into the sector to ensure that agribusiness continues to be a major contributor to the Australian economy.

Understanding Workplace Health and Safety

Workplace Health and Safety (WHS), also known as Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S), are a series of laws and regulations.

They’re in place to ensure that employers make every effort to protect you (their employee and the public) from both physical and psychosocial workplace hazards.

From slippery floors, heavy loads, unguarded machinery and hazardous substances, to workplace bullying, violence and aggression, everything is covered.

In 2012 an Australian wide model formed as the basis for health and safety laws. But there are still regional variations, so it’s a good idea to have an idea about what your rights and responsibilities are within your state or territory.

What do WHS laws mean for you?

When you start at work or change jobs, these laws mean employers must provide:

· safe premises

· safe machinery and materials

· safe systems of work

· information, instruction, training and supervision

· a suitable working environment and facilities.

Your responsibilities are likely to include:

· following safe work procedures

· using any personal protective equipment (PPE) required

· not interfering with or misusing anything provided for work health and safety at the workplace

· not placing others at risk

· taking every precaution with your own health and safety

· seeking help if your health and safety or of that of a colleague is at risk

· reporting injury or illness immediately

· reporting unsafe acts or conditions

· undertaking all training required as part of the WHS

Starting a new job

When you first start work, or even if you move to a new role in the same company, you’ll probably start off with an employee orientation or induction (they pretty much mean the same thing).

Orientations are a run-down of all the important things you should know about day to day business and what happens in an emergency.

It’ll usually include an explanation of what the business expects from you. They’ll let you know about other departments in the organisation and describe the hierarchy (who your supervisors are and anyone else you need to report to). You’ll also learn more about the administrative processes you’ll need to do your job well, as well as any other miscellaneous policies and rules.

You’ll also cover WHS topics such as:

· hazards and risks in your workplace.

· special equipment, such as personal protective equipment, which may require additional training

· safe work practices

· work health and safety legislation

· emergency procedures e.g. exits, evacuation measures, emergency contacts

· location of the first aid station

· how and where to report injuries, unsafe conditions and acts

· your right to refuse hazardous work.

If you are going into a job that has risk associated with it, for example agriculture, transport, construction, electricity or gas services – then you’re more likely to have a more in depth induction.

You’ll be encouraged to ask questions at any time, so if you’re unsure about what to do or how to do it safely – make sure you ask. In new jobs you’ll also often have a mentor or supervisor you can check in with.

You may have an assessment after your orientation. It’s just to check you’ve understood everything and that the training you were given was up to scratch.

Introduction to Safety – designed for young workers starting out in their first job. It aims to give a new workers an understanding of the basic health and safety issues they may face at work. safe@work Self assessment tests – to test your knowledge of the safe@work modules. You can also earn an Award of Attainment.
