Student Leadership

Introducing year 12 leaders

I am Cassidy Jackson and I’m the SRC President for 2022!

I have been a part of the SRC Committee since 2018 and have enjoyed expressing new ideas through student voice ever since. When I first came to MGSC I looked up to the student leaders which has inspired me to be the best role model possible for the younger years. Having a sense of college pride at MGSC and making the school feel like a place where students can express any concerns and/or ideas is a major aspiration of mine.

For 2022 my goal was for the SRC to meet fortnightly and be excited to express our ideas and brainstorm together, rather than gather and feel as if it is a chore and that people are there more so for the title and the badge than the passion of Student Voice! I believe this has been achieved by steering away from just organising the free dress days, now the SRC has incorporated events that get the whole school involved. The SRC aims to represent all of the MGSC students' ideas no matter how little or big. The SRC strives to do so by being approachable to their peers so the whole of MGSC can make a change, not only the leaders.

At the moment the SRC are organising an MGSC Big Freeze where all funds will be donated to Fight MND, a foundation that is trying to find effective treatments and a cure to motor neurone disease. The event is on yhr last day of term 2 where teachers will be dunked according to how much MGSC can raise for Fight MND. Fight MND Big Freeze beanies are on sale and can be worn at school for a limited time. This project has been super exciting for the SRC as the event promotes college pride whilst also fundraising for such an important cause. There will be a full report on the SRC's FIght MND fundraising event in the first newsletter of term 3.

Hello, my name is Sabina Eyre-Walker and I am the Performing Arts Captain for 2022. Performing Arts has always been something that I have loved. It has become a big part of my life and my positive experience at MGSC. That's why this year I would love to see more performances and activities at the school, highlighting all students and their talents. I am very excited for what's to come in Semester 2 as the Performing Arts team are working on new plans to be introduced. Including Just Dance held at lunchtime and creating a video displaying all the wonderful creative aspects of our school and opportunities the upcoming year 7s can be a part of

Due to the craziness of this year we haven’t yet had the oportunity to properly meet you all yet, so let me properly introduce myself. Hi, my names Isobel and I’m one of your College Captains with a fair passion for a random array of things. I love theatre, film, music and sport, I play the trombone, my favourite movie is easily Mammamia, I love footy and basketball, I go for sydney swans,  I'm playing a bald man in the school musical and I'm a big procrastinator. Not going to lie, I spend a good majority of the school day staring out the window daydreaming. Half the time I’m thinking about what I'm looking forward to and what I should be doing, then the other half of the time I’m daydreaming about lunchBut it's what I'm looking forward to and the things I want to achieve that’s the important stuff to be dreaming about. But the issue is there's usually too much daydreaming and not enough doing…

With that being said I went into this year with the goal to encourage all students to do as much as possible, to participate and get involved as much as they can,  to really give everything a go. I discovered myself this year that pushing my comfort zone even just one more inch is all you need to discover something great. School is the perfect time to simply have fun and try new things.  For the remainder of the year I want to encourage everyone to question ‘why not’ when an opportunity passes by and to simply end that question rhetorically with no answer but action :)

Whilst there is a lot going on, there is always room for more and improvement. I want to remind every student that they have a voice and a leadership team that would love to hear it. If you ever have any brilliant ideas for our school, for an event or for what you wish you could see happen just give a shout out to the leaders amongst you!

Railway Crossing Community Feedback

On Tuesday, four student leaders were invited to attend a community meeting about the proposed removal of the railway crossing at Warrigal Road, Parkdale. Kingston Council officers and some of those directly involved with putting together the proposal arranged the meeting. Council were specifically seeking input from students from local schools.

Candice Prior (Student Voice & College Council), Georgie Grubb (Student Voice), Madelyn Lust and Mietta King (Junior School Captains) were taken through the proposal and were then given the opportunity to ask questions  and then add their own suggestions and wonderings. Our four representatives raised many issues and actively engaged with the presenters and council representatives.
