Junior School Staff Professional Learning
This term, Junior School staff have been accessing online PL units via the ‘Be You’ portal. This is a national mental health initiative delivered by Beyond Blue, in collaboration with Early Childhood Australia and Headspace. ‘Be You’ supports educators from early learning services and schools to develop a positive, inclusive and resilient learning community where every child, young person, educator, and family can achieve their best possible mental health. Junior School staff having been working through three online units focused on the affirming, embedding, and empowering of resilience in our young people.
The Writing Revolution
The Junior School is embarking on a shift in the way we teach writing. In late 2021, staff looked at a new approach using the Hochman method. This technique is embedded in the framework known as The Writing Revolution. The guiding principles of this new approach are…
- Students need explicit instruction in writing, beginning in the early years.
- Sentences are the building blocks of all writing.
- When embedded in the content of the curriculum, writing instruction is a powerful teaching tool.
- The content of the curriculum drives the rigor of the writing activities.
- Grammar is best taught in the context of student writing.
- The two most important phases of the writing process are planning and revising.
In Term Three, Prep to Year Six classes will plan and implement a full term of The Writing Revolution in their literacy blocks.

Parents & Friends AGM
Next Tuesday, 21 June, will be the College’s Parents & Friends Annual General Meeting. It would be wonderful to have strong representation from the Junior School parents at the meeting, which takes place at 6.00 pm in the Zachariah Room at the Senior Campus. If you come to the front Reception, you will be shown the way. The P & F is the heart and soul of the College. They do a tremendous amount of fun and fund raising. If you are a new parent to College, the P & F is a wonderful way to connect with others and to make a contribution to a learning community.
