Damian Drum Visits McGuire

Federal member for Murray, Mr. Damian Drum, visited McGuire College on Thursday March 21st.  He spoke to the Year 12 students during Homegroup about his role as a member of the House of Representatives in Canberra, the sorts of issues he deals with daily and answered questions from the students ‘without notice’. They included questions on immigration issues and climate change.

Student Performance Averages (SPA) data

Last week the first Student Performance Averages (SPA) data for 2019 McGuire College students was released. Each six weeks, over the school year, teachers are asked to rate their students out of 5 for 1) Accomplishment, 2) Productive Use of Time, 3) Effort and Attitude and 4) Management of Personal Learning.

The ‘average’ for individual subjects and for all subjects is an extremely useful indicator of student performance. An overall SPA average of 3 is considered to be an ‘average’ result.

Twenty-six students received an overall average of 4.5 or better for their first SPA reports and they will be rewarded with a celebratory lunch at school in the Presentation Room on Wednesday April 3.

The twenty-six students who received SPA average of 4.5 or above were:

Year 7: Samantha Comline, Zanthe Newham, Jacklyn Crowhurst, Amirah Ahmet, Raihana Mohammadi, Matilda Henderson, Ella Sutherland, Trinity Drain and Madeline Judd

Year 8: Ali Alsaber, Vanessa Ansante, Anais De Waal, Hannah D'Andrea and Gretel Coward

Year 9: Hamidullah Haidari, Angelina Mason, Kaitlyn Crowhurst, Kade Hardy, Brianna Nimla-Or, Georgia Comline and Olivia Judd (6 of the 7 students from 9S!!)

Year 10: Ben Okely, Yusra Syamsuri and Asmaa Sukirman

Year 12: Zahra Alkarawi and Matthew McMellon

A further 206 students received an overall SPA average of between 4 and 4.4. In Homegroup, these students received a letter of congratulations.

Homegroup teachers, classroom teachers and Year Level Coordinators have begun the conversation with students about setting goals around improving future SPA performance. We also encourage parents and guardians to have similar conversations with their children. Please also take advantage of the parent/teacher interviews at McGuire College next Wednesday (April 3) after school and next Friday (April 5) during school hours.

Australian Ballet Education Program

Last week we were extremely fortunate to be able to offer a ballet program to 18 of our Year 7 & 8 students. This program was run by The Australian Ballet, where instructors came to the school, helped teach ballet to the students and choreograph a ballet routine which would be performed later that week.

The students showed a lot of resilience during the program, braving the hot afternoon temperatures in the classroom practicing. However despite this they were able to push through and pull together an amazing performance at Eastbank on Friday afternoon in front of parents and friends.

It was hard to believe that they only had 10 hours of training leading up to the final performance! Great work to all involved!

Legal Studies

Mrs Robertson’s Year 11 Legal Studies class and Mrs Roberts Year 10 Business and Legal Awareness class were lucky to visit the Shepparton Law Courts. This valuable experience gave them an insight into the court system and legal industry.
