News from The Patch Café

One of the greatest joys within the SAKG program is when we hear “that was delicious”! Many students are often afraid to try something new, however, they know that to enjoy growing, harvesting or preparing they must taste, even just a tiny bit. Most often they are surprised at how good the new food tastes and take pride in describing the flavours.

During a regular kitchen session, we chat about the produce being harvested from the garden and talk about the many exciting dishes that can be created using them. At this time of year, we spend many weeks using up a bountiful pumpkin harvest. We started with a delicious pumpkin curry served with steamed rice and spiced apple chutney. For a sweet treat, the students finished off the menu with warm, fluffy blueberry muffins! This week our students have started a new menu consisting of leek and mixed pea risotto, followed by pumpkin scones served with our very own homemade marmalade.

During the most recent lockdown, Liz was faced with our lemon tree laden with beautiful fruit, so together we made many jars of lemon marmalade, preserved lemons and orange/lemon marmalade. Jamming and preserving is a great way to use excess produce, these will now be used in many future recipes and menus to come.
