Disability Inclusion Event

On the 15th of September, the Year 11 VCAL students ran a Disability Inclusion event for Year 7 and 8 students in the Springvale Town Hall. They were helped by Year 12 VCAL students, students from Emerson School and the City of Greater Dandenong, Youth Services.

The activities organised were to acknowledge different types of disabilities and to promote inclusivity in our community. These six activities highlighted the challenges that those with varying abilities face in day to day life. Each student from Year 7 and 8 was highly encouraged to take what they've learnt and share it with the wider community. On behalf of the VCAL Killester students, we would like to thank the Emerson students and the City of Greater Dandenong for being a part of our event. Thank you everyone for coming.

"I enjoyed raising awareness on vision impairment by creating a fun activity for the Year 7 and 8s to enjoy which was called Hide and Clap (a version of hide and seek)."

Eden

"I really loved how the Year 7 and 8 students participated in all the activities that raised awareness of various disabilities. It was enjoyable to be able to create an obstacle course to challenge students who were blindfolded when they completed it. I feel that the Year 7 and 8 students are more aware of disabilities."

Breakfast Club

Breakfast Club has opened in Term 4 with a new toaster. The money raised to purchase this toaster was from the hot drinks purchased by staff who supported the Breakfast Club. Thank-you to all staff and students involved in the Breakfast Club as well as Dingley Bakers Delight who provides the bread.

So far the Breakfast Club has supported over 814 students who have had toast, with Fairy Bread toast being the most popular item.

VET Expo

On Friday the 7th of October, the Senior VCAL students ran a VET Expo in the theatrette at lunchtime. On display were stands for Hospitality, Barista, Childcare, Travel, Fashion Design, Disability, Allied Health, Beauty, Animal Care and Sport and Recreation.

Feedback received included:

'I have learned how to run the event next year.'

'I learned that VET allows students to choose the passion they like.'

What have you learned? 'So much!' according to Ms Buick.

Share the Dignity

The Senior VCAL class would like to thank the Killester School Community for their donations for Share the Dignity/'It's in the Bag'. As you can see from the bags, many sanitary items were collected to make a difference for those experiencing period poverty.

Alumni

On Friday the 14th of October, Alumni Marta Miranda spoke to Year 11 VCAL students about becoming a DJ. The students were given the opportunity to use her equipment to mix their own music.

"This was a fun experience. It is a different career that most people don't think about but still is very creative. As I love music so much, this is something that I could do on the side in my spare time. Thank-you Marta for coming." Vicki

"It was cool to see how to mix music, how to control the sound and when to change tracks. This is something that I want to do in the future." Audrey
