The Book of the Year

In August, the Children’s Book Council announced the winners of the Book of the Year in six categories.  Our dedicated group of students in the Book Club read through 12 books in the Older Readers category and also the Younger Readers category.  What did our students think of the winners in both these categories?

Winner of the Older Readers Book of the Year: “Tiger Daughter”  by Rebecca Lim.

The students scored this book highly, giving it between four and five stars, finding it both relevant and an honest portrayal of the difficulties of fitting in at school, and coping with pressures at home. “Tiger Daughter” tells the story of two immigrant families struggling to cope in suburban Sydney and was the most popular book in this category for our  student judging panel. Well done!

Winner of the Younger Readers Book of the Year: “A Glasshouse of Stars” by Shirley Marr.

The students were not as enthusiastic about this book, which is written unusually in second person.  It addresses racism, and a family dealing with grief in their very new country.  The main protagonist finds comfort in the glass house in the back garden, where she imagines a magical world .  The students had issues with the way the book was written, but found that it addressed “racism in interesting ways”.  For this category, the students felt that the judges got it wrong, and preferred “ Rabbit, Soldier, Angel Thief”  by Katrina Nannestad.

The Library Weekly Trivia Quiz

The Library is running a weekly quiz and students are welcome to join the quiz.  There is a poster of the week’s questions on the windows near the photocopier, and students can either fill in a paper copy of the answers or they can use this link to answer the quiz online:  https://api.socrative.com/rc/vcRXYw

Good luck to everyone who gives it a go.
