Get ready, get set to Go for Gold this October!

Get active this October (3-28) and help our school become the Glen Eira ActiveSchools Champion for 2022! One lucky student will also win a Fitbit Ace. You will receive a Golden Ticket at the start of Term 4 and each time you walk, ride or scoot to school, tick one of the boxes on your ticket. Being active helps keep us fit and healthy so whether you walk, ride or scoot to school, all or part of the way, it all counts! Don’t forget to mark Friday 7th  October in your diaries because we will be encouraging teachers, students and parents to participate in a car free day so everyone walks, rides or scoots to school. At the end of October, you’ll submit your entry to go into the draw to win a Fitbit Ace as well as help our school take out the interschool honours! Good luck and have fun!

Steam News

Foundation students have started coding using a variety of apps. Coding in the STEAM room is helping them to work on problem solving, logical thinking, creativity and persistence. They Year 1 students have also been working on their problem solving, teamwork and design thinking skills. After reading the book Rosie Revere Engineer, they worked in teams to create a flying machine to safely transport Rosie down a zip line. I’m happy to report Rosie didn’t fall out of any flying machine!

Year 2 students have also started their coding journey this term by being introduced to the Scratch Junior coding app. They are becoming familiar with various coding concepts and have so far drawn 2D shapes and coded a sprite (character) to makes its way around the shape.

Year 3 & 4 students have been introduced to the amazing Splat 3D drawing tool that helps them draw 3D objects. During the past few weeks, students have learnt to draw some basic 3D objects and are now using these skills to draw larger pictures. This tool is assisting with developing their spatial and design thinking skills. It’s great to know that an Australian invention made from recycled plastic can captivate the students so much that they keep asking to use them every week in STEAM!

Meanwhile, the Year 5 students have spent the past few weeks familiarising themselves with BBC micro: bits. Micro bits which are smaller than a business card, are like minicomputers and have a range of inputs and outputs like a microphone, a compass, a speaker and an LED screen. Students are coding their micro: bits and having lots of fun.

Year 6 students have been working in teams to design and create arcade games. The main material they are using is cardboard. We are still in the early stages of constructing these games but look forward to seeing how they will all come together in the following weeks!
