Senior School Debating

Year 8 Debating Team Wins Grand Final

On Monday, two of our fabulous Junior debating teams went to Winmalee High School to compete in the Finals of the Blue Mountains Debating Competition.

It was amazing to see so many Year 7 and 8 students getting involved in such a wonderful co-curricular activity. This year we had varying levels of Debating experience, with some students having debated for a few years, and others for the first time! Despite this, by the end of the season, everyone had added to their expertise and enhanced their teamwork skills.

A great season from both teams saw them gain a place in the Finals!

Our Year 7 students had to debate the topic 'There should be no homework for students'. Some really strong points, argued by both teams, made the debate a tricky one. In the end, some great arguments and a strong rebuttal from St Columbus meant they were awarded the debate. Our Year 7 team should be congratulated for qualifying for the Semi-Finals; a great achievement!

Our Year 8 team won through to their Grand Final and thus had a one hour preparation, something that was new for many in the team! Their topic was 'Children should be paid for household chores' and we were debating the Negative. The 'Great Year 8 Debate' drew a massive crowd, and Grammar came out victorious! What a fantastic result!

I would like to extend a special thanks to Ms Grassmayr for facilitating the Debating co-curricular and supporting us throughout the season!
