Developing Social Skills

 Relationship Skills and Social Development

The children will be experiencing new and exciting social and emotional programs and workshops this term.

We have invested in a program called "Skills for Growing," which encompasses a range of social and emotional skills that children develop throughout their primary and secondary years, as well as into adulthood.

Listening and Collborating
Listening and Collborating

We are trialling a UNIT from the program, and each class, from Prep to Year 6, will focus on social development. This includes skills such as:

  • listening to one another
  • working collaboratively
  • seeking help when needed

One component of the unit is addressing bullying. All children from Prep to Year 6 will participate in a workshop from the BULLY ZERO organisation.  The blurb of their workshop states that the program is about UNDERSTANDING BULLYING.

"Young people are provided with evidence-based information on bullying, the different types, and its impact on young people. Participants are also taught a variety of strategies to help them assess and respond to bullying situations whilst also identifying and understanding the role of bystanders."

Finally, our Year 5 and 6 students will have the opportunity to engage in an intense series of 3 workshops throughout the term, presented by the REACH FOUNDATION.

THE REACH VISION: Every young person has the support and self-belief they need to fulfil their potential & dare to dream.

THE REACH MISSION: To encourage young people, no matter their circumstances, to believe they can achieve.

                                                                       Workshop 1

This workshop aims to create a more positive peer dynamic. Throughout a 90-minute workshop, we explore this through:

  • Reflecting on the impact of judgement from others
  • Understanding the concept of comfort zones and how they affect us
  • Recognising and celebrating what makes young people different and unique
  • Providing reflective tools and strategies to use outside of the workshop
                                                                         Workshop 2

This workshop aims to understand limiting behaviours in the classroom and create strategies to work better as a team. Throughout a 90-minute workshop, we explore this through:

  • Experiencing the impact of our behaviours on ourselves and others
  • Developing personal accountability and understanding ownership
  • Defining positive behaviours and highlighting that we have a choice in our actions
  • Practice these new behaviours and experience the outcome they create
                                                                            Workshop 3

This workshop aims to build empathy and resilience through sharing personal experiences. Throughout a 90-minute workshop, we explore this through:

  • Reflecting on the lives that we have lived and the way they've" shaped us
  • Highlighting that we are not alone in our challenges and normalising the emotions that come with it
  • Creating a deeper sense of connection by sharing honestly and openly
  • Identifying our goals and passions that drive us forward

We are excited to be offering a range of fabulous opportunities for children to develop and enhance their social skills through the activities in the classroom via our new program and the workshops being delivered.
