Grade Bulletin - Term Four, 2022

'Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Primary School provides a range of holistic learning experiences to enable students to:

Religious Education

6.7 We Celebrate The Sacraments Part II: This unit continues the exploration of sacraments. Students will explore the Sacraments of Marriage and the Anointing of the Sick. They will examine the Church as a sacrament and study various vocations as a response to our baptismal call.

 

6.8 Advent to Christmas: A Time for Longing and Fulfilment: This unit explores the liturgical season of Advent as a time of waiting, longing and preparation. Through the Jesse Tree the story of the people of faith in Scripture, who prepared and longed for the coming of the saviour, is told. The unit focuses on Christmas as the fulfilment of God's promise of salvation and explores some ways the Catholic community celebrates Christmas. Students are invited to reflect on the birth of Jesus when God became human and lived among us.

English

Students will study a range of texts that relate to the concept ‘Power’. Students will engage in modeled, shared and independent tasks relating to reading and viewing, writing and representing, responding and composing and speaking and listening. Students will also be taught explicit skills in relation to grammar, punctuation and vocabulary. They will be following the Soundwaves spelling program and will have the opportunity to revise their spelling skills using the online component of the program.

Mathematics

The content for the Term covers the concepts of: 

Data, Fractions and Decimals, Time, Three Dimensional Space, Volume and Capacity and Whole Numbers. 

 

It is expected that all children in Year 6 are practicing their times tables regularly. If students are confident in their times tables, they could learn them backward as division instead, or add a zero to their times tables, e.g. instead of 12 x 2 = 24, learn 120 x 2 = 240.

Science and Technology

Students will be learning about the difference between contact and non-contact forces and how energy is transformed from one form to another. Students are provided with an opportunity to investigate how electrical energy can control movement in products and systems. This unit of work will develop students’ abilities to design, test and evaluate product or system that demonstrates energy transformation, further developing an understanding of the interrelationship between force and energy.

Mandarin

This term students in Kindergarten to Year 6 will continue their participation in a Chinese language program called the Meg Language Program. The Meg Curriculum is written by the co-author of the Australian Curriculum. All students and teachers will participate in the digital learning platform via weekly Zoom sessions.

History

This term we will continue the topic ‘Australia as a Nation’. This topic moves from colonial Australia to the development of Australia as a nation, particularly after 1901. Students explore the factors that led to Federation and experiences of democracy and citizenship over time. They understand the significance of Australia’s British heritage, the Westminster system and other models that influenced the development of Australia's system of government. Students learn about the way of life of people who migrated to Australia and their contributions to Australia's economic and social development.

Creative Arts

In Visual Arts the students will be working on using a range of mediums to depict concepts of freedom and belonging linking to their novel study this term. Students will also be participating in a 'design and make' task for their Kindy Buddies. They will be interviewing their buddies to establish their interests and in turn, will be designing and constructing a suitable toy for them to have as a keepsake.  

Personal Development, Health and Physical Education

In Health, students will describe the factors that influence personal identity and examine the physical, social and emotional changes that occur during puberty.  Students will also explore concepts of self-esteem, feelings and dealing with emotions. If at any time you would like to discuss the content of this Curriculum area please speak with your child’s class teacher.

Homework 

Students are to complete their allocated weekly tasks in their Homework Books.  It is expected that the children will read for at least 20 minutes each night as part of their 45 minutes of nightly homework. Parents are encouraged to discuss what the children have read on a regular basis.  If your child is unable to complete any or all of the homework, please write a brief note in the student diary for the work that is incomplete. Homework is due every Monday. 

 

At home, you can assist your child by: 

  • Assisting them in proofreading their homework
  • Promoting neat and careful presentation of work
  • Correcting their oral language when needed
  • Assisting them to broaden their vocabulary and comprehension skills through discussing current affairs
  • Encouraging reading for enjoyment every day
