Grade Bulletin - Term Four, 2022

Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Primary School provides a range of holistic learning experiences to enable students to:

Religious Education

3.5 Called to be Saints:

In this unit, students will explore the Christian call to be saints which we all receive at our Baptism. Students will identify, in their experience, people who demonstrate holiness in love and service to others. They will also learn about the canonised saints – those whom the Church has declared saints and set before us as models of holiness. The process of canonisation will be explored.

 

3.8 Advent to Christmas: A Time for responding in Love

The unit develops the concept of Jesus as a gift and fulfilment of God’s promise. The students will be able to recall events in the Scriptures and explain how Mary is a model for us. They will also recognise the liturgical season of Advent and Christmas as times to celebrate their relationship with God. 

English

During this unit, students will engage in modelled, shared, guided and independent tasks relating to reading, viewing, writing and representing with a focus on Non-Fiction texts in particular Biographies. Students will be taught explicit skills in relation to text structure, grammar, punctuation and vocabulary. Students will engage in speaking and listening activities and will participate in writing experiences to develop their ability to construct informative texts. The Literature this term is based on the following texts from the Little People, Big Dreams series - Mother Teresa and Nikola Tesla and the novel Malala - My story of standing up for girls’ rights. Students will be furthering their comprehension strategies with an explicit reciprocal reading program. Students will follow the Year 3 Soundwaves spelling program. 

Mathematics

Flexible learning groups will continue this term. The activities are differentiated and the children are grouped in order to cater to their needs and abilities. During these groups, the students are explicitly taught concepts from the NSW Mathematics K-10 Syllabus. The topics taught in Term 4 are; Position, Fractions and Decimals, Area, Chance and Time. 

Science and Technology

In Science and Technology, Year 3 will continue to explore the Material World. Students will focus on how solids and liquids change state and the properties of natural and processed materials. They will be given the opportunity to investigate how different properties of materials affect the sustainability of products. Students will develop a solution to an identified need or opportunity, using a variety of materials. 

Mandarin

Students in Kindergarten to Year 6 will continue to participate in a Chinese language program called the Meg Language Program. The Meg Curriculum is written by the co-author of the Australian Curriculum. All students and teachers participate in the digital learning platform via weekly Zoom sessions.

History

This term we will continue our unit on ‘Community and Remembrance.’ This topic provides a study of identity and diversity in both a local and broader context. Moving from the heritage of their local area, students explore the historical features and diversity of their community. They examine local, state and national symbols and emblems of significance, and celebrations and commemorations, both locally and in other places around the world.

Creative Arts

In Visual Arts, the students will use sketching techniques and colour to create an artwork that will represent a chosen Saint. Students will develop their skills in using plasticine and claymation to bring a nativity scene to life. 

 

During Drama, students will be responding to and interpreting drama experiences and performances. They will be using a variety of drama forms such as improvisation, monologues and role play to express meaning in a wide range of situations. Students will explore the role of a director, actor and filmmaker as they write a script about a fairytale or fractured fairytale. Students will explore the book ‘The True Story of the Three Little Pigs’ to assist them.

Personal Development, Health and Physical Education

In Physical Education, students will perform and refine movement skills in a variety of sequences and contexts. Students will perform routines that connect movements such as rolling actions, weight transference, flight landings and balancing to explore centre of gravity and stability. Students will have the opportunity to work collaboratively in a group to create, support, teach and perform routines. 

 

In Health, students will study a Healthy Relationships unit. Students will investigate the skills and qualities that build caring and respectful relationships. They will identify the rights and feelings of others and devise strategies to support themselves and others.

Homework 

It is recommended that Year 3 students spend a duration of 30 minutes on Homework per day. This includes 20 minutes of reading every night. Students are required to record what was read in their School Diary each night. This Term, students will continue to complete their Homework in a book. Some aspects of their Homework will be required to be completed on their computer. Students are to return their Homework book and diary every fortnight on a Thursday. The due date will be on the Homework sheet in the students' books.
