Religious Education

K:6 God is with us. This unit introduces children to the three figures in the Old Testament: Moses, David and Jonah. The stories told in this unit highlight the love and faithfulness of God. God is with the weak and vulnerable, and even raises them to important places. God’s love and graciousness are for all people. It is universal.

K:8 Advent and Christmas. This unit focuses on the seasons of Advent and Christmas. The concepts of waiting and joyful anticipation are explored through the use of the Advent Wreath and the story of John the Baptist. Advent is introduced as a time of preparation that points us toward Jesus. The Christmas story is told through the stories of the Annunciation, the birth of Jesus and the visit of the shepherds. In engaging with the story, students are presented with the Good News that Jesus is the promised Saviour, the gift of God.

English

Reading and Viewing: The children will engage with a range of imaginative texts. Children will view and respond to literature and join in shared book activities on familiar and imaginary books. Reading groups will occur each week for students to develop a range of reading strategies.

Writing and Representing: This term, the children will learn to compose their own simple imaginative texts and other forms of written communication including poems, narratives, letters and posters. The children will continue to follow the “Soundwaves Spelling” program. They will focus on recording initial, middle and final sounds that we hear in words as well as writing high-frequency words. The children will demonstrate an awareness of nouns, adjectives, conjunctions and pronouns.

Mathematics

This term, children will engage in Number and Measurement learning opportunities. They will model equal groups, share collections equally and solve problems involving sharing. The children will learn to read the time to the hour on clocks. They will describe and compare the capacities of containers and the volumes of objects using everyday language. Capacity is deliberately separated in the teaching sequence from the more difficult concept of Volume. This allows students to gain mastery of the concepts without confusing them with each other. Concepts of Addition and Subtraction will be revised later in the term.

Science and Technology

This term, children will focus on the physical characteristics of objects and the effects of these on how they move. Children will investigate how push and pull forces create movement and introduce the fundamental concepts of force and motion.

Mandarin

The students will continue their weekly mandarin lessons via zoom. Students will continue to use spoken Chinese to communicate with teachers and peers. During our Mandarin lessons, students participate in structured and routine interactions, such as using learned sounds, formulaic phrases, and verbal and non-verbal responses.

History

In Term 4 the children will continue to develop skills of historical inquiry and communication, their own history and that of their family. The children will share family celebrations and learn about special community events.

Creative Arts

The students will participate in simple speech, singing, playing and moving activities, demonstrating an awareness of musical concepts.

In Visual Arts the children will respond creatively to literature and various cross-curriculum concepts. Students will develop drawing, collaging, designing and painting skills.

Personal Development, Health and Physical Education

In Term 4, students will demonstrate a variety of movement skills and movement sequences. Students will respond with movement stimuli eg. rhythm, beat, music and body movements and create movement sequences without equipment eg. formations in rhythmic and expressive activities. Students will also have the opportunity to move at different speeds, different levels and in different directions with others in a designated area.  In the area of Personal Development, the children will further develop their social skills through the PALS program and learn about the importance of positive friendships.
