Positive School Behaviour
An update on SWPBS
We are now in our second term of implementing the School Wide Positive Behaviour Support framework (SWPBS). This is just the start of an 18 month process that assists Victorian schools to improve social, emotional, behavioural and academic outcomes for all children.
What's new in SWPBS?
Across Term 2, staff have completed a range of professional learning modules on 'Acknowledging Expected Behaviours' run by a Department expert coach and SWPBS team leader, Erin McNamara. Staff have analysed current research and are in the process of designing a whole school acknowledgment system to increase positive behaviours at Aberfeldie.
Why is it important to acknowledge expected behaviours?
▶ Teacher praise has been supported as among one of the most empirically sound teacher competencies (Maag, 2001).
▶ Contingent attention increases academic performance and on-task behavior (Sutherland, Wehby, & Copeland, 2000).
▶ When we focus our praise on positive actions, we support a sense of competence and autonomy that helps students develop real self-esteem (Davis, 2007).
What is to come?
On day 1 of Term 3, we will be launching our new acknowledgement system across all classes. We are very excited for this launch and to witness to way it improves student motivation and desire to be respectful, responsible and try their best. Below is a picture clue of what is to come. Student and community information will be released in Week 1!
