Year 2 News
What’s New in Year 2
Dance Around the World Incursion
Last Tuesday the Years 2 students were involved in their Dance Around the World Incursion. This was the perfect introduction to our next Unit of Inquiry, ‘Where we are in Place and Time’. Our central idea is, ‘The past influences our present and future.’
Each grade learnt a dance from a different country.
- 2A learnt USA Cheerleading,
- 2B Indian Bollywood
- 2C Japanese.
The facilitator Brigid taught each class several moves that culminated in a complete dance. Each class spent approximately one hour learning their dance and then all grades performed for each other.
There were lots of laughs and smiles from the students. We all had a great time. We hope you enjoy our photos and videos.
Swimming
The Year 2 students have been very busy with the swimming program over the past two weeks. We have had lots of fun and the teachers have been impressed with their behaviour and independence in getting changed.
Who We Are
A balanced lifestyle is influenced by the choices people make.
Each Friday afternoon we have been having a Year 2 assembly where we present various students with learner profile certificates. Congratulations to our recent recipients.

This concludes our Unit of Inquiry exploring how balanced lifestyles influences the choices people make. The students were risk-takers when they stood up in front of their classmates and spoke about a chosen sport. It was so gratifying to see skills such as voice projection, eye contact and listening skills being used by all.
Our new Unit of Inquiry will commence this week and looks at where we are in place and time. Specifically, we are exploring how the past influences our past and future.
Maths
This week we have focused on vertical addition where regrouping is not required, through a variety of games and activities.
We have completed Maths with Someone by playing “Dice Vertical Addition” where the children rolled a 6-sided dice, 4 times to create a two-by-two-digit number. They then added their numbers to find the answer and the winner was the one with the highest sum. Some even extended themselves by creating three or four-digit numbers.
It was an opportunity to discuss and teach regrouping as some digits were more than ten! We also played “vertical addition snakes and ladders”, “first to four, where the students added 2 numbers together and tried to get four numbers in a row and “Airplane battleship” where you selected two numbers and added them to try and shoot done your opponent’s plane. This game required regrouping. We also played another fun game called “Race to the Moon” and the children got to select from a variety of games to reinforce and practise addition strategies that they have learnt in previous weeks.
Literacy
This week in Literacy the students have been learning how to add a Bold Beginning, Mighty Middle and an Excellent Ending to their writing to make it more exciting. The students were explicitly taught various examples of these, and we used mentor text to show the students actual examples of them in action. There are many types of Bold Beginnings and Excellent Endings that the students can use. See some of the examples below.
We revised adjectives and the students used them to describe a beautiful, coloured bird and various objects. The students enjoyed listening to the story, If You Were and Adjective. https://video.link/w/41Wtd
During our writing time the students completed a narrative story titled, ‘The Strange Egg’. There were some very created stories and some very interesting things in the eggs. We hope you enjoy viewing our literacy photos.
Cybersafety
Last week in Cyber safety students learnt about the features that make online passwords safe and secure. Students learnt the importance of using passwords that were long, strong, and secure, with a focus on using combinations of letters and symbols to create these.
Students were then given the opportunity to practice creating their own passwords that were shared with the class. Students could then decide as a group the effectiveness of different password combinations.
This week's Cyber safety lesson will focus on students comparing online vs offline games, providing students with an opportunity to share the different types of games they play and the benefits and potential challenges both present.
