It is hard to believe that we are already halfway through Term 2. I have had the pleasure of meeting with various families over the past few weeks and it is so pleasing to hear so many positive comments regarding the College as a community. MCC prides itself on being a place of safety and belonging, as such, we appreciate feedback from families that allow us to continue growing and embedding meaningful change.
A reminder to all of our parents, as a College, it is often outside our realm of influence to be able to manage situations regarding the use of social media. This is because generally, these actions do not occur during school hours. If we receive information regarding negative interactions online we strive to manage the situation promptly so that all students learn how to manage themselves, their actions and their responses. A reminder of the following:
- Please be aware of the legal ages that a child can possess different social media accounts.
- Don't assume that because your child is of legal age to open an account, they have the skills and maturity to navigate the site appropriately. We work with our students regarding this, but as social media use occurs mainly outside of the school, parents should be aware of what accounts their child has, continually monitor their interactions, and have frequent and open conversations about online safety.
- If there is a negative online interaction, take a screenshot, block and report the offender or account. If necessary, inform the police or the school so we can work with you to move forward.
- Phones are banned for all students from Year 7-10 at MCC. There should be no inappropriate use of online activity occurring at school as devices are not allowed.
- Students and their parents sign the College ‘Safe use of technology’ policy when their child receives a device. Please be aware of the conditions outlined in this policy and support the school in monitoring your child's schools Chrome book/Laptop.
- Any student found to be filming at school, posting pictures of themselves or others doing inappropriate things in their College uniform or, following or creating sites about the school, will have their parents contacted and consequences put in place.
- If you are unsure and seeking support on information to support you and your child in this area there are a number of short information sessions on SchoolTV which can be found on our College Website. You can also use the link below to access the E Safety Commission website. https://www.esafety.gov.au/kids/I-want-help-with/being-safe-online.
It is important that we work together to ensure that every child lives safe from bullying online. We are unable to manage situations we are unaware of, so we ask, if you have concerns or are hearing information about students/ situations occurring at the school, please contact us. It is important that we have the opportunity to manage issues so that all students can contribute to the MCC community, a place of learning, safety and belonging.
