Writing

CURRICULUM FOCUS

This week in Writing the students will be continuing their narrative unit; by showing, not telling our readers.

VOCABULARY

Narrative writing: A piece of writing that focuses on telling a story. Narratives have characters and a setting as well as a narrator who tells the story.

Showing not telling: A technique that writers use to create a picture in the reader's mind.

If you ‘tell’ somebody what happened they will only know the facts. If you ‘show’ using details, the reader will feel like they lived the experience with the characters in the writing.

ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING

Using the topic ‘Simon was happy’, we can show not tell by writing:

‘Simon’s face lit up with a toothy smile from ear to ear. His eyes shone brightly like fiery stars. He leapt off his feet with both his arms stretched up into the air, ‘YES!!’, he cheered.’

Ask your child to write a show, not tell scene for one of the following topics (or have them come up with one of their own):

I was surprised

It was a cold morning

She was angry

I love football

It was a good meal

It was a nice night
