Teaching and Learning

Being On Time for School

It is important that students are arriving to school each day ready for the 9.00am bell. Learning programs start at 9.00am and rolls are recorded.

We appreciate your support with assisting students to be organised to be on time. If your child is going to be late, please attend the school office to sign your child in. Students are not permitted to sign themselves in.

What is BELS?

Blackburn English Language School (BELS) is part of the New Arrival Program (NAP) and provides intensive English language programs to primary and secondary aged newly arrived students from language backgrounds other than English (LBoTE).

Blackburn English Language School delivers intensive English language programs to newly arrived students across the North-eastern Victoria Region (NEVR). The school provides an environment that encourages students from a range of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds to become confident and active participants in the wider Australian community.

The school operates across three locations, two metropolitan and one regional. The main site, Whitehorse, is located in Burwood East, the Maroondah Campus is in Croydon North and the Wodonga campus is in the north-east of the state in Wodonga.

To be eligible to attend Blackburn ELS students must:

  • hold a visa that entitles them to enrol in a Victorian government school.
  • speak a language other than English as their main language at home.
  • begin at the school
    • within 18 months of arrival, if entering Foundation year.
    • within 6 months of arrival, if entering any other year of schooling.
  • at the time of enrolling at the language school, be undertaking or intending to undertake primary or secondary education at a Victorian government school as soon as practicable after completing the course.

Eligible students typically attend the language school for between six and twelve months, depending on their educational background and/or refugee/humanitarian status.

Rangeview currently has students attending the language school that will return to us following this wonderful educational experience.

ACARA NAPLAN Item Trial 2023

Rangeview Primary School has been selected by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) to participate in this year’s Item Trial for Level 3 and Level 5. The purpose of the Item Trial is to evaluate potential NAPLAN test questions (‘items’) for use in future NAPLAN tests. The results from the trial will help ACARA ensure that NAPLAN tests are valid, reliable and fair for all students.

About the Item Trial

  • The Item Trial is being held in approximately 500 schools across Australia between Monday 22 May and Friday 7 July 2023.
  • Schools are carefully selected to ensure that a range of student backgrounds and abilities is represented.
  • The Item Trial is about testing the questions, not about testing the student or their ability. Results are not reported.
  • Students will sit two Item Trial tests. At Rangeview, these will be a Numeracy test and a Writing Test.
  • The tests will be administered at the school by trained school personnel and/or external test supervisors. Students will use the school laptops, the devices that they use for everyday classroom activities.

At Rangeview the Item Trial will take place on the following dates:

The camp offers a range of challenging activities that build self-esteem, confidence and teamwork and is an integral part of the Level 6 curriculum. The camp is set in natural bush land and the surrounding environment provides enriching experiences which children will treasure and recall for years to come. Various activities may include abseiling, ropes course, giant swing (30m), initiative course, flying fox, rock climbing and much more.

I would like to wish everyone attending the camp a wonderful time and thank our dedicated staff and our wonderful parent volunteers for allowing our students the opportunity to experience all that a camp can offer.
