Principals' Update

It’s Official! $8.4 Million

We are very excited to share that, on Tuesday, the Member of the Victorian Legislative Council for the Northern Metropolitan Region, Sheena Watt, attended our school to share that Carlton North will receive $8.4 Million for Capital Works for our school buildings. This is a fantastic opportunity for our school, and we have an extremely active Working Party that has been meeting regularly to prepare for this announcement. This working party has been consulting with staff, and a number of members recently attended Abbotsford PS to view their recent Capital Works. We very much look forward to creating our 150 year old school into a learning environment that caters for the learners of today and in the future.

Online Safety & Digital Wellbeing Webinar for Parents and Carers

We strongly encourage at least one parent/carer from each family to attend the Online Safety and Digital Wellbeing Webinar next Tuesday, 30 May, from 7 pm-8.30 pm. Our Leadership Team regularly manages online incidents that occur outside of school with our students. We are often seeing students sending inappropriate or mean messages to each other online. This behaviour that occurs outside of school then impacts our students’ learning and wellbeing and does not align with our school values of Inclusion, Respect or Trust.

It is extremely important that, as parents and carers, we are aware of the current online climate in that our children are frequenting and communicating so that we can assist them to navigate safely in this space.

Rebecca Martin and Steve Villani from Evolve Education will be presenting an online Safety & Digital Wellbeing webinar for parents and carers of F-6 students.

National Sorry Day Friday, 26 May

National Sorry Day remembers and acknowledges the mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were forcibly removed from their families and communities. National Reconciliation Week is a time for Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements. Further information about National Reconciliation Week this year is available on the Reconciliation Australia website.

Attitudes to School Survey Years 4 - 6

Yesterday our Year 6 students completed the Attitude to School Survey (AtoSS). Over the next few days, our Year 4 and 5 students will also complete the survey.

Both CNPS and the Department of Education value student voice as a means to improving student engagement, wellbeing and quality instruction and this survey seeks to find out what our students think of their school.

The AtoSS is an annual student survey offered by the Department of Education to assist schools in gaining an understanding of students' perceptions and experiences of school. Students are asked about their thoughts and feelings in relation to their school, their learning, peer relationships, resilience, bullying, health and wellbeing, physical activity, and life in general.

Pivot Survey

Starting next week, our teachers will use Pivot surveys with their class. This survey allows the teachers to collect meaningful feedback on their teaching practice and ultimately improves student experiences in their classrooms. The survey takes 10-15 minutes and is anonymous for the student, with results being confidential for the teacher. Surveys will be conducted within the next two and a half weeks. Students can choose not to complete the survey if preferred. Further information on the Pivot survey can be found in this newsletter.

COVID Cases

We have seen an increase in COVID cases across the school. We would like to remind all families to please be mindful of COVID symptoms. If your child shows any symptoms or is unwell, please conduct a Rapid Antigen Test and keep them at home. If your child does test positive for COVID, please notify the school so that we can watch vigilantly for symptoms within your child’s class.

We have reminded our staff to turn up the air purifiers in all learning spaces and offices. We also have plenty of RATs for those families who need to test family members.

Please note if there is a COVID case in the family, family members can continue to go to work and school if they test negative on a RAT.

Casual Relief Teacher (CRT) Shortage

As you may be aware, there is currently a teacher shortage in Victoria. We are very fortunate at CNPS to be fully staffed at our school however, we are struggling to find Casual Relief Teachers (CRTs) when staff are absent. When a teacher is unwell, we try very hard to arrange a consistent CRT for the class, but due to the shortage of CRTs across the state, arranging a consistent replacement can be a challenge. There may be a possibility that no CRTs can be booked, and in these situations, we split a class across the upper year levels.
