Magis report

This week’s Magis Awards Breakfast was a great success with over 100 people in attendance.  Congratulations to all award winners - A full pictorial list will be in next week’s newsletter.  The 2020 Magis Awards  highlights powerpoint is attached with this newsletter via the link below. At the event special awards were made to Magis Captain Ben Linsten and Magis committee leader Alex Panther for their outstanding leadership of Magis – they have both made enormous contributions over the years and have earned the deep gratitude of the College.  It was wonderful to have our Principal, Mr Rob Henderson, Vice Principal, Mrs Kath Negus and Deputy Principal, Mrs Jess Bouwman all presenting awards.  Their great support is deeply appreciated. Also assisting with announcing of awards were teachers who have played  a major role in the success of the Magis program this year, Mr Simon Carrello, Mrs Alison O’Connor, Mr Damien Connellan, Ms Kirrralee Dawson and Ms Daisy Farley. They receive awards in honour of their great service as did Ms Lisa Martella, Mr Ciaran Gallagher and Mr Sam Tout. Special thanks go to our Year 11 Magis leaders who along with Ben and Alex who assisted with the presentations: Skye MacMillan who was introduced as the 2021 Magis captain, Caitlin Green, Oscar Hegge, Bella Pether, Grace Barbour and McKenzie Richardson. This is a truly exceptional group of young people and the College and the Magis program are so fortunate to have their leadership talent, enthusiasm and  terrific service ethic.

Congratulations to our Year 8 International Debating team which won their first debate last Friday against St Aloysius College in Sydney. The team consists of Thomas Syminton, Jacob Davila, Gemma Bailey and Max Watt.  Teams from Australia, New Zealand, several Asian countries and Canada are competing in this prestigious program. This week we compete against Reddam House College.

This year for the first time we have a team in the Ethics Olympiad which will take place all day on Monday 9 November. The team is working hard to prepare philosophical arguments on eight different cases which form the basis for the ethical questions on the day.

Year 7 students are now finalising their work for the Personal Project Exhibition  which will be held on Thursday 12 November. The exhibition is opened at a special breakfast for parents and supports at 7:30am in the College library.  A colourful program for the event is provided.

Finally, entries are still open for students in Years 7, 8 and 10 who would like to participate in the 2020 Brainways Quest Competition which takes place all day at school on 19 and 20 November. This excellent competition features a full day of tuition from key UWA Lecturers followed by a day of competition against other colleges.  As with International Debating and the Ethics Olympiad, Quest will be participated in via Zoom this year because of Covid-19.
