Online Safety and Positive Relationships

Year 4 and 5 have been delving into online safety and positive online relationships as part of the Upstanders Project for 2020. To build the link between home and school we have exclusive access to the Parent Resource suite as part of our work with Project Rockit (during the remote learning period Grade 5 students participated in a series of webinars led by this organisation). Please feel free to access these resources yourself – available for the next 10 days.

Mindfulness: taking notice (See DET Student Wellbeing for more)

Mindfulness is paying attention to how you feel and what you see, hear, taste and smell. It is the opposite of rushing and multitasking. Mindfulness is being in the present rather than thinking about the future or the past.

Teachers weave a range of strategies into the school day to build student ability to be present. Some of these include:

  • Mindfulness colouring
  • Regular movement breaks – Go Noodle is popular in the junior school!
  • Circle Time discussions focused on the senses
  • Smiling Minds (often after lunch)

It can make us more aware of our thoughts and feelings and can help reduce stress and anxiety. Mindfulness can help us slow down and promotes rest and healing.

As shared as part of the DET Wellbeing Resources: Smiling Mind has created digital Care Packs to support the mental health of kids aged five to 12. The resources can be downloaded from the Smiling Mind website and provide parents and carers with practical support to help manage anxiety and promote positive mental health.  Each pack includes learning tools as well as activities for children to use within the home or school environment. To download the pack, see:  Smiling Mind Digital Care  Packs

Friday 20th November is Emotions Day: Initiated by Jaime and Oakley, Ruby and Felix (our School Captains and SRC Coordinators respectively), students are encouraged to wear a colour that best represents their emotion felt during lock down. Gold coin donations will go to Beyond Blue, as chosen by our students.
