Sustainability

Trying to reduce our waste not only benefits our environment, it also helps us reduce costs and improves quality of life for the community.

The majority of our waste is made up of food, paper and packaging, as well as plastic. To just focus on recycling and landfill is no longer sustainable. We have to do more in order to repair our Earth. We are all called to:

Rethink our decisions in terms of the waste they might create.

Refuse unnecessary packaging, unsustainable materials, anything that might harm us, others and the natural environment.

Reduce the amount of waste we produce; we can achieve this when we...

Reuse  and Repurpose things

Recycle and

Rot (compost) food scraps

The waste hierarchy shows the most and least sustainable methods of waste disposal.

Did you know that Campaspe Shire has an A-Z Guide of Waste and Recycling which helps you to find where to recycle or dispose of items properly in Campaspe Shire?

You can download it here:

The same applies for us at St. Joseph’s College. At the moment we have a three-bin system, where students are encouraged to differentiate between waste for the red, yellow and orange (soft plastics) bin. Staff and the Canteen also collect food scraps.

We are planning to

  • Add a way to collect food scraps from students.
  • Resume collecting bottle tops and bread tags soon.
  • Be a ‘MobileMuster’ location, where people can recycle their old mobile phones

Obviously, whatever we do, the most effective way to reduce waste is to avoid it in the first place. So, bring your refillable water bottles and food containers and ditch the cling wrap where and when you can.

Stay tuned for more.
