A taste of Uni life

The amazing race

On 24 August, a group of Middle School students including most Year 9 class captains attended a day-long excursion to visit RMIT University and Melbourne University to gain an insight into studying/life at university.

We took public transport to Melbourne Central, where we walked to the RMIT city campus. An RMIT a student named Lauren met up with our group and Mr Ryan. Lauren gave us a short tour of RMIT which included a presentation on what the university has to offer. This was followed by a Kahoot! quiz on what we learned during the presentation. It was interesting to learn that RMIT is both a TAFE and University and the different pathways that are available onto the different courses.

We then got into teams for an “amazing race” around the RMIT campus, where we had to collect clues. Hectically, all teams ran around the campus searching for the clues our map asked for. As a group of students running around the city one team after another, I’m sure we looked a little ridiculous but it was a fun activity to do to get to know the campus!

After the RMIT visit concluded we travelled by tram to Melbourne University.

The campus seemed overwhelmingly large. Appearance wise, we quickly noticed there was a large contrast between RMIT and Melbourne University. RMIT has a very modern and geometric design, however Melbourne University has very traditional buildings. Stephanie Giao, a SASC graduate from the class of 2017, kindly agreed to give us a tour of the campus and given the size of the campus, there were a large variety of areas to explore.

Overall, the excursion was a wonderful experience. As Middle School students, it’s only natural for us to feel anxious about our future after graduation, but I think this excursion eased our concerns, even if it was just by a little bit!
