Book Club Shadow Judges

Book Club Shadow Judges

Book Club is a school-based group who meet once a week to discuss all things book related. It provides a unique opportunity for students, from all different year levels, who share a love of reading and writing to meet regularly with like-minded students.

Book Club is for students interested in reading and writing and has been running during Term 2 and throughout remote learning, although this week has been fantastic now, we are back at school and are in the same room! Book Club this year has been given a very exciting opportunity offered by the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA).

In 1946 the CBCA established the CBCA Book of the Year Awards, annual awards to promote children's books of high literary and artistic quality. These awards are now the most influential and highly respected in Australia. The judging panel comprises literary and literacy experts in children’s literature, children’s librarians or teacher librarians.

Taylors Lakes Secondary College Book Club has been selected to participate in a pilot junior Shadow Judges Program for the Book of the Year Awards Older Readers Category. The junior Shadow Judging Team, made up of ten students from our school, will be the official voice of young Australian readers.  Ten Book Club members have taken up the challenge to run with this opportunity.

Over the next few months, these students have to complete the following:

  • Commit to reading and analysing six short-listed novels, considered to be the finest books for young adults published in Australia in 2019.
  • To respond creatively - as a group - to each of the shortlisted books.
  • Decide as a group and nominate the book they feel should win the Book of the Year and to demonstrate to the CBCA how they reached this decision.

The CBCA have been very generous and, along with free copies of each of the short-listed books, are also paying for the Shadow Judging Panel to participate in a Writing Workshop with an Australian author of the panel’s choice. All of the creative responses created by the Shadow Judging Team will be shared on the CBCA website and viewed by schools all around Australia.

We would like to congratulate the official Shadow Judging Panel:  Tahlia S 7J, Siddita C 7F, Cameron R   7J, Cassandra R   9A, Christen K   7J, Chryssa Mc  7J, Trisha K  8J, Maddisyn S  8J, Jarrod N  11A and Rylee M 11H.

If you have a student who would like to attend Book Club or be involved in the Shadow Judging Panel please encourage them to contact a library staff member or to turn up to any Book Club meeting. Book Club meet on Mondays in Library Classroom 1 at the start of lunchtime.
