SHIRLEY MANGIAMELI

Shirley Mangiameli (Echuca East TLI and NAPLAN Co-ordinator)

The 2021 school year was again an extraordinary and challenging one for every school community. Many Echuca East students spent time last year learning remotely and our children and their families made an exceptional effort to provide continuity of teaching and learning to our students during this time.

This year the Victorian Government has continued to support the Tutor Learning Initiative (TLI) to enable schools to support students who need extra assistance with their learning which may have been disrupted last year. This funding is for 6 months but EEPS has prioritised the program with additional funding so it can run for the year. Students have been selected to receive this additional support based on their achievement data and other measures of learning, that have indicated their expected learning progress may have been impacted by the remote and flexible learning due to COVID-19 in 2021.

At Echuca East, we will be focusing on both Literacy and Numeracy with four experienced teachers fulfilling this role of the tutors again this year. The teachers who will be working regularly with the students in small group tutoring support are Mrs Grant (Level 4), Mrs Mangiameli (Level 3), Mrs Hill (Level 2) and Mrs Holmfield (Level 1).

These teachers will work with the student’s classroom teacher to minimise disruptions and complement the lessons taking place in classroom. Groups of selected students will change throughout the year as their progress is monitored.  If your child is to be provided with this extra assistance you will receive a pamphlet outlining their involvement in the coming weeks.  We look forward to being able to support many Easties with their future learning.

NAPLAN 2022:

This year EEPS will be undertaking the national testing, NAPLAN, online (using iPads).  Students in Grade 3 and Grade 5 will sit a series of tests in Writing, Language Conventions (Spelling and Grammar), Reading and Numeracy.

NAPLAN Online tests include a range of question formats and interactive features.

Students answer questions by clicking, typing and dragging. Some questions include audio or interactive tools (Numeracy tests) and all questions can be reviewed and answered, or flagged and returned to later.

Over the coming weeks students will be provided with sessions using the platform online to practise and become familiar with the various types of questions and the format of the test,  giving them the best possible opportunity for success when the formal testing schedule takes place in May 2022.

If you have a child in Grade 3 or Grade 5, we highly encourage you to explore sample tests for their year level in order to familiarise them with the different item types as well as the features available to support them. These can be found at the Naplan online public demonstation site. (Scan the QR code).
