Mathematics

Welcome to Mathematics at Rangeview!

Last week we celebrated ‘Twos-day’, provided a Dart Board Brain Teaser and a game the whole family could play called Strike it Out. Included this week is an introduction to Growth vs Fixed Mindset and how this relates to Mathematical learning. We have also included a problem solving activity the whole family can engage with.

FUN FACT #1: Zero is the only number that can’t be represented in Roman Numerals.

FUN FACT #2:  A baseball diamond is a perfect rhombus. A rhombus is a parallelogram with opposite equal acute angles, opposite equal obtuse angles and four equal sides.

GROWTH VS FIXED MINDSET

We often hear students say 'I'm no good at Maths' or 'I can't do this'. Sometimes this can be attributed to how they approach a task and whether they have a fixed or growth mindset. “Students with a fixed mindset are those who are more likely to give up easily, whereas students with a growth mindset are those who keep going even when work is hard, and who are persistent. The two mindsets are associated with different achievement pathways.”

During the Maths Start Up program in Weeks 1 and 2 at Rangeview, teachers have been focusing on students developing a growth mindset to support their learning not only in Maths but in all areas of the Curriculum. The below poster is just one example of a poster in each classroom (developed by Rangeview Staff and students).

More information and tips on how to support your child at home to develop a growth mindset will be included in forthcoming newsletters.

FAMILY GAME TIME

Please visit https://youtu.be/HeO0q0cSvx0 to watch a student demonstrate how to play. Our junior students may be encouraged to give this game a go after watching the video.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

In the next issue we will be including more information about developing a mathematical Mindset and tips on how to help your child at home.

If you would like to learn more about something specific in Mathematics, please email the office at rangeview.ps@education.vic.gov.au with ‘Attention: Vicki and Lee’ in the subject line and we will respond to you directly.
