Around the Grounds

Earth & Environmental Science with Mrs Boyd

Year 11 Earth & Environmental Science built their understanding of the processes of soil formation with a visit by George Truman from Local Land Services. They got their hands dirty (literally) learning new skills testing a variety of soils to identify the properties of clay and sandy soils collected from local farms. They then used their knowledge of rock classification and the rock cycle to outline the types of rocks that are the source of the soils in our local area. This type of engagement with local specialists is invaluable as it demonstrates to our students the practical context of what they are learning in class. Perhaps we may see some of these students in the future as agronomists, geologists, farmers, or soil scientists.
