“Jesus was often seen bending down with compassion over the sick and suffering who were waiting for a consoling or healing word.” Father Jules Chevalier

As we return to a full and uninterrupted term, it is great to take time to consider others, and the MSC constitution #32 remind us of this every day. We are encouraged to be kind and compassionate to all that we encounter.

This message was once again shared with us at our wonderful 2022 Opening School Mass, with Father Bob Irwin, MSC, Father Ted McCormack, MSC and Father Paddy Mugavin presiding over a wonderful celebration. As well as welcoming the new year, all our 2022 student leaders were officially sworn in and badges blessed, and our new staff officially welcomed to the College.

Our giving back to the community commenced on Tuesday the 22nd of February when wonderful staff and students cooked meals and then served lunches for members of the Hamilton community through the Uniting Church lunches program. This ecumenical approach to supporting those in need is a wonderful opportunity for our students to get a better idea of the struggles that exist close to home.

The season of Lent began on Ash Wednesday with a moving Liturgy run by the School Vice Captains Bella and Josh, with the help of the other Year 12 leaders. The main message this year was that even though we can give something up through fasting, we are also encouraged to do something extra that will make our world a better place. The staff and students were encouraged to let go of a stone that is holding them back and replace it with a stone that will benefit them.  (e.g., a stone of hatred can be replaced by a stone of friendship).

Ash Wednesday is also where we launch our 2022 Project Compassion. On Shrove Tuesday we sold pancakes to help begin the fundraising activities. Each homeroom is allocated a Project Compassion box where students are encouraged to donate loose change. We also have a casual day on St Patrick’s day, when students who come in casual clothes pay $2 for the privilege, with all funds going to Project Compassion.

On Tuesday March 8th, the Year 8s completed their Reflection Day. The theme was Value of the Heart, and students took time to look at stereotypes and pre-conceived ideas.

The students also had a great time bonding, thinking about who they appreciated at Monivae, and what they appreciated about the school.

The day was completed by each student making a heart to remember their value to our community.
