Student Leadership
Leadership Training
Over the past month or so, students in all year levels have had the opportunity to apply for a leadership role for 2023. One of the positives that came from our time in lockdown, has been streamlining the process of application and making participation more accessible to all students with an online form.
There is a healthy balance across all teams with most year levels and our new Captains have taken on the responsibility of promoting their teams widely to build visibility. Leadership training took place over half the day on Monday 12 December. Part of the session was working with Jenny Connolly on realising the values matrix as part of the new instructional model for MGSC.
From the interview process, it became clearer that students are slowly gaining a better understanding of what voice and agency is and are recognising when they can’t see it happening. The school review process and more recently, the focus groups seeking student input on a variety of issues, has provided stronger examples of students participating in impacting change. All teams next year will be looking at how they can better determine their goals for their team and go about executing these to reach measurable outcomes.
We are looking forward to having groups of students participating in various leadership conferences and bringing back what they learn, to support all of the teams and to build the capacity in our students.
On Monday 12 December a leadership training day was held for all the future leaders of 2023. After discussing the school values in our years levels we continued on to get together in our leadership teams. In our groups we began to brainstorm ideas about potential events and goals we could work towards achieving in the coming year. After brainstorming we continued to write down our main goals for the year. In the end this day was an enlightening experience which enabled us to gain a deeper understanding of our roles, responsibilities and capabilities of being a leader. This day was one in which we gained the opportunity to meet new people and to help the students and staff of our school benefit further from our actions.

Whole School Picnic on the oval
The annual Whole School Picnic was held on November 30th with perfect weather and strong attendance and support from students and staff. Our Sports and House Captains organised a variety of novelty events and races and Phil Hull coordinated a Staff/Student relay with multiple teams. The Environment & Sustainability and SRC teams ran the BBQ and we had some of junior student leaders selling lollies on behalf of the PFA. The newly formed Big Band directed by Sue Cook, provided the musical entertainment. It was great to see so many students enjoying being outside using the oval and track areas. Thank you to everyone for joining in and helping to make it a great way for the whole school to come together out on the oval.
Student Leaders 2023
After weeks of applications and interviews, we can announce the members of the student leadership teams for 2023. Congratulations to all those students who applied.
While some students were disappointed not to receive the position that they may have hoped for, it has been pleasing to see so many students see the opportunities available to them by getting involved with a different team. All teams are important and have an important role to play in improving life at the College. Some teams still have just a few vacancies and if there are students still interested, please contact Ms Harvey.
There are a number of leadership conferences that we are planning to have students attend where they will learn new skills, hear from speakers in a variety of areas of interest and here students from all over Melbourne and Victoria come together to build everyone capacity to lead and make a difference.

To be a leader at MGSC takes a lot of hard work and responsibility but it is also a great honour to participate and the feeling of helping change our school for the better . As a leader it enables you a stronger ability to convey the ideas of your fellow classmates and friends so that everyone can contribute and have a say to the positive changes of MGSC and watch the school grow and thrive. Being a leader at MGSC is a great opportunity to make a difference, meet new people and step out of your comfort zone whilst really getting involved in the school community.
