Year 4 Zoo Snooze Camp

YEAR 4 ZOO SNOOZE CAMP

ARRIVAL, INTRODUCTIONS & GROUPS By Alyssia and Cataleya

Firstly, after our arrival, our hosts Mikey and Chris asked us to share what animal we wanted to save from extinction. The Red Panda, Bees and Snakes were all highly said ones. Then we all got split into four groups. We needed to figure out what our team animal was by taking a quiz about it. The groups were named the Bandicoots, Stick Insects, Honey Eaters and Tassie Devils.

We all got a badge to represent our team name so we could differentiate between teams.

Then the teams competed in a scavenger hunt answering questions about the Melbourne Zoo. It wasn’t just about being first, it was about gettng all the questions right.

DINNER & NIGHT WALK By Sophie and Beatrix

At camp for dinner, we had the choice of mac and cheese, salad or pizza. Later on, we had hot chocolate for supper. The campsite that we were on was the old Elephant enclosure and the barn we were eating in is where an Elephant used to sleep!

At about 8:30 we set off for a night walk where we saw heaps of animals such as Lions, Tasmanian Devils, Macaws, Giraffes, Snow leopards and Zebras. When we saw the Lions, they came really close to us and roared! By the time we got back, the sky was black.

Fun Facts: The Lions’ roar can be heard from two kilometers away! Lions need their mane so that their neck can be protected from any bites. Also, the darker their mane is, the more in charge they are; It is really rare to see a Giraffe sit down in the wild, because it is so hard for them to get up quickly and escape from predators, and Giraffes sleep with only half sleeping the other half awake.

SLEEPING ARRANGEMENTS & BREAKFAST By Sebastian and Oscar

Hello viewers, today we will discuss the sleeping arrangements and the breakfast at the Zoo Snooze Year Four camp. Firstly, even though it was chilly, we still enjoyed it. The tents were a generous size. Although the tents were great, the walls were too leany. Underneath the tents were wooden slabs that had a sign with elephant names that were previously there or still are at Melbourne Zoo. Some were Bong-Su, Peggy, Queenie and Betty. In the tents,  I was with Oscar and Robbie but Oscar was sick which was pretty sudden and a bit frustrating. Although Oscar was sick, Robbie and I still had a good night. We played Uno Flip. After that, we had a BUFFET BREAKFAST!!!! There were plain cheese toasties, cereal and yoghurt. It was Amazing!

MORNING WALK By Peter and Frances

In the morning we went on a walk around the zoo. The first animals we saw were otters. Some people have never seen otters before. It was so cool to see them in real life. The zookeepers hid some food called kibble with fish. It was so cool to see them dig around. After we watched the otters play we went off to see seals. One of the seals that we saw was named Bella. She was found at a farm where she was not meant to be. The zoo sent her back to the wild but unfortunately, they saw her again and she had been attacked so the zoo decided to look after her to keep her safe. Once we watched the seals, we went to see the fairy penguins.  They made little bubbles when they swam. Their fur is oily so they can swim better. Other fish we saw were seahorses, puffer fish, and zebra fish that were super big, Two stingrays that were light brown and three baby sharks. We also saw elephants called Manji and Looji.

MONKEYS by Pat C and James

Monkeys, in general, are smart, working and furry creatures. At camp, we saw a variety of different monkeys including my favourite one Orangatrangs and Spider Monkey. Orangutans are just like people but very fury and bigger. Orangutans have very long arms and sometimes they don't mind eating with their feet. They also build nets to sleep in like birds.

Spider monkeys are very cheeky. If you leave your food next to you on a bench they will just steal your food and you’ll never notice. They were named spider monkeys because they look like spiders as they hang upside down from their tails with their arms and legs dangling.

MEERKATS by Myles & Noah

We explored a variety of different species of animals. Today we are going to tell you about the amazing meerkats. The meerkats are very interesting and cute, they love to run around their habitat and see all the people watching them on display. And they love to assert their dominance over other animals. Even though they love to think they are the strongest species, the lions would eat them alive. They created tiny little holes around them to get their way through other people and meerkats without being spotted. Their amazing idea to create those tunnels made humans make them so they can use tunnels for a more fun experience.

LUNCH, TOILET MAZE & A FUN FACT by Ivy and Lenny

At lunch, we went to Macaw takeaway cafe, Giraffe cafe and Lakeside cafe. Grade 4 had to choose which cafe to go to, the people that chose the giraffe cafe had to go all the way back to the Macaw takeaway because the Giraffe cafe’s hot food was made at the Macaw takeaway.

After lunch we went to a toilet maze, it was soooo cool. There was a big toilet seat on a wall that led into a bog pipe acting as a tunnel and when you press a button water would spray.

And..to finish off we will end with a fun fact about zebras and giraffes. Even though they are best friends during the day, at night the zebras kick the giraffes out of their dens and do not let them back in.
