HUMANITIES

WELCOME TO HUMANITIES FOR 2023

This year, the Humanities faculty will be led by Mrs Angela Masterson and Mr Phillip O’Brien. Last year, we said farewell to our Senior History teacher and Key Learning Area Manager, Mr Simon Hughes, after many years teaching English and History he is now enjoying a well-earned retirement.

As we begin the 2023 academic year, the Humanities Faculty have spent some time reflecting on the excellent VCE results achieved in 2022. We are very proud of all our staff and students who worked so hard to achieve amazing results. Business Management, Geography, History and Legal Studies all achieved higher than the school average for 2022, and Aimi Hatigan (Year 12) attained a perfect score of 50 in Legal Studies.

Aimi’s Legal Studies teacher has provided the following reflection:

“Aimi is a diligent and motivated student who worked consistently throughout the year seeking constant feedback from her teacher, especially after SAC results. She always strived for improvement by re-writing SAC responses by using the correct structure, addressing the task words, and using sentence stems to further improve her writing.

Aimi would seek clarification from her teacher (by asking relevant questions) on key knowledge to ensure that she understood the content well. Then she would complete practice questions to apply her knowledge and get her teacher to correct her responses. Aimi would then further improve her writing responses, based on her teacher's feedback. This held Aimi in good stead leading up to the legal exam. Aimi deserves her perfect score in Legal Studies!

Well done Aimi!!! I am super proud of you!!!

Hi I am Mrs Angela Goile and I am very excited to be joining the McKinnon family. This year I will be teaching Year 11 Accounting, Year 11 Business Management and Year 10 Commerce.

Prior to education I worked as a CPA Accountant which, although I enjoyed, I have always been interested in being in the classroom. After being a teacher for four years I know I have made the right decision. I thoroughly enjoy sharing my knowledge and experience but I really enjoy getting to know all the young people I teach. I am looking forward to my future at McKinnon Secondary College

Hello, I am Miss Monica Lo Presti and in 2023 I will be teaching Year 7 and Year 11 Geography, as well as Year 12 Media. I have previously taught at another co-educational government school and am also currently studying a Master of Geography part-time at Melbourne University, focusing on the integration between human and physical geography. I am passionate about helping students learn more about global issues and the interconnection between people and the environment. I am excited to be part of the McKinnon community and am looking forward to getting to know the students, parents and staff that make McKinnon Secondary College such a wonderful school.

Caitlin Arneil

Hello, I am Miss Caitlin Arneil. This year I am teaching Year 8 History alongside Years 8 and 9 English.  I have written my thesis on post-World War II Australian perceptions of the Holocaust and have a keen interest in Australian history and 20th Century conflicts. I am passionate about teaching students to use History as a lens to view their own worlds through, and in doing so, developing empathy and gratitude. I look forward to being a part of the McKinnon community in 2023.

We look forward to reporting many more successes, field trips and excursions in coming newsletters.
