Year 7 to 9

Term 4 update

Term 4 began with a number of Middle School Values Assemblies. The focus of these were to acknowledge and congratulate last terms award winners (listed below) and to also reset some of the basic standards we expected from students, to ensure that our learning environment was as pleasant and supportive as possible. There was one core message that all assemblies (including Senior School) were promoting this term and that is ‘back to basics.’ We are hoping that this message translates over into 2023. We really would like the support of all families in the EDSC community, to promote these basic standards as we return for 2023.

For a while now, our post Covid routine has seen mental health and wellbeing as the cornerstone of our interactions between staff and students. As a College we feel that we have done much in this space to support students in their transitions back to onsite learning over an extended period of time and as a College we want to get back to pre Covid high expectations.

As a school community we need to take pride in our school and the image we portray to the wider community is very important. We are asking all students, beginning at the start of 2023, to make sure they are in correct College uniform, at all times, both to and from the College and adhere to other basic expectations of conduct.

Organisation skills are an important component of success in VCE and it starts in Middle School. Parents are encouraged to ensure their children have good routines, which allow them to be up in the morning and on time to school, ready for learning. Students need to be mindful that as they get older they need to be more responsible for their own routines and developing good practices early on that will follow them into VCE. I would encourage all students to try and maintain a decent routine over the holidays. Yes, rest is important, however, sleeping in and staying up late is not optimal for developing adolescents. Eat well, sleep well, exercise and enjoy time with loved ones. That is what this time of year is all about.

Advance 2022: Congratulations to all students in Middle School. You really did well to refocus and start on a positive note in your new learning environments for 2023. Thanks to all staff for your lesson planning and delivery.

Presentation Night: Congratulations to all of our award winners from Middle School who attended the presentation evening at New Hope Baptist Church. A very special mention to our outgoing Middle School Captains, Rhianna Dhingra and Darell Ho, who shone on the night and ran the evening along with Mr Campbell. I couldn’t be more proud of the way they spoke and presented. It really is a reflection on the Middle School cohort as a whole that we have such great students and great student leaders.

New Middle School Leadership Team: Congratulations to Neel S and Isabel V who are the new Middle School Captains for 2023. They will also be supported by Harris M and Amanda H who are the Middle School Vice Captains for 2023. We look forward to working together to improve student engagement and wellbeing and supporting student learning throughout Middle School. The new Middle School Leadership Team was announced at the recent presentation evening where they received their badges from College Principal John Roberts.

Sign Off: Thank you to all staff, students, parents and community partners for everything we have accomplished together in 2022. The Middle School team wish you all a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We hope you all remain safe and enjoy the break, we look forward to further exploring our curiosity in 2023 and beyond.

Child Safety and Wellbeing at East Doncaster Secondary College: information for families and the school community

The Victorian Government has announced new Child Safe Standards to further strengthen child safety across organisations, including schools. The new standards recognise the critical importance of families and the broader school community in maintaining and promoting child safety and wellbeing.

East Doncaster Secondary College has reviewed and updated our child safety policies and procedures to ensure they meet the requirements of the new standards. These are available to view on our school’s website, on a Compass News Feed, at the school’s Reception.

We are committed to continuous improvement in our approach to child safety and wellbeing and welcome feedback from families and members of our school community on ways we can further strengthen our child safety policies, procedures and practices.

If you have any suggestions, comments or questions, please contact the Principal, John Roberts or Assistant Principal, Cameron Campbell.

Student Medical Expenses

Parents/carers are reminded that they are liable for all medical expenses incurred as a result of a student’s injury or medical need, including transport costs such as ambulance costs (this may include an air ambulance should that be considered necessary).

Parents/carers are responsible for any medical expenses (including ambulance costs) incurred if their child is injured or requires medical treatment or an ambulance while at school or participating in a school activity.

Parents/carers may not be called if an ambulance is required, until after an ambulance is called, depending on the situation. The College staff will use their judgment as to what action to take in cases of a student’s accident or sudden illness.

We encourage parents/carers to have up-to-date ambulance cover and medical insurance.

Damage to Students’ Personal Items/Property

Parents/guardians are reminded that any personal item/property that is brought to school by a student is the responsibility of the student and is not the responsibility of the school and is not covered by school insurance. Refer to Personal Possessions Of Students Policy in the EDSC Policy handbook on the College website. Students are responsible for personal items/property they bring to school. Neither the Department nor the school is responsible if any student’s personal item/property is lost, stolen or damaged.
