Our Local Community
What a busy term it has been! In Inquiry, we have been learning about our local community of Preston. After our two big field studies (around our school and to the Preston Market) it was time to put what we had noticed and learnt into practise and create our very own mini community out of cardboard.
We made a Police Station. We used blue paper to cover the box as the main colours of the police are blue and white. We also added a sign and logo that tells us it is a Police Station. Police officers help us out. If you need to call the police you should call 000 and ask for the Police.
We used red paint to make our box look like a Fire Station. We cut the box to make doors that swing up so that the fire trucks can enter and exit quickly. We also added a helicopter pad as sometimes helicopters help extinguish fires from above. Firefighters help us if there is a fire nearby. If there is a fire you should “crawl down low and go go go!”
We have constructed a big mechanic workshop! We painted it blue. When you visit a mechanic workshop, sometimes there is a food truck next to it, so you can wait and eat while your car gets checked. So we also added a food truck. To enter the workshop you can use the door or ramp. We have a garage door too for the cars to enter into.
We made a toy shop because we saw it at Preston Market. At the Preston Market we saw toys and games. So we made a toy shop and copied them. We painted it pink because pink is a bright and fun colour. We made a sign that says it is a toy shop.
We created a hair salon because on our Preston community walk we walked past one. On our shop, we put a sign and also logos and symbols like scissors and a hairdryer. There are people inside getting their hair cut and having a coffee from the coffee shop.
On our community walk around Preston, we walked past the Sacred Heart Mission which is an op shop where volunteers work. The op shop sells all different types of items for adults and children. We painted our box white and included a symbol of a love heart as that is the logo of the Sacred Heart Mission. We also added windows with mannequins in them.
Dentists are very important in our community because they help our teeth stay healthy, so we made a dentist. We painted the dentist green and we made people who are inside the dentist getting their teeth cleaned. At the front of the dentist shop we drew a picture of teeth so that people will know it is a dentist.
We love ice cream so my group decided we would build an ice cream shop. We painted the box orange because we thought that is a really exciting colour and people would want to visit. On top of the sign that tells us it is an ice cream shop, we made a giant ice cream so people would recognise what type of shop it is. We made a blue and white shade as sometimes on hot days people enjoy their ice creams sitting outside but out of the sun!
On our Preston walk and at the Preston Market, we walked past so many coffee shops! We chose to paint our box brown, because brown is the colour of coffee beans. We made a sign that says COFFEE SHOP so that people know what type of shop it is.
Foundation Writing
On Friday, we looked at a strange fruit called a Buddha's Hand. Ann found it in the supermarket near the lemons and limes as it belongs to the citron family. It probably originally came from India and looks like a hand so this is why we think it is called a Buddha's Hand. The fruit doesn't have flesh or seeds inside but the rind can be used to flavor drinks and baked foods. When we grated off some rind it smelt very lemony but sweeter than a lemon. We had fun drawing it and writing about it.

Small Moment writing about our City Excursion
PLAYGROUND By Katelin
We all took a break and stopped at the Flagstaff Gardens playground to eat our recess and have a bit of a play. When I was finishing my final mouthful I heard so much talking and laughter from the swings, so I went straight to them. There were four of them and all four met in the middle when you or your friend swung. After that I sprinted down the concrete to the spiderweb, the toy one. It was pretty big and before I knew it I was climbing up and down it repeatedly. After that I then moved on to a small red-boarded sand pit. I waited for the current person to get off the(pretend)digger and then I had my turn. The digger was a neon orange colour. Then later I went on a fairly smooth green slide and some other equipment. Then finally the teachers called, ”We're going to go now children.”
Train Ride By Massie
When we got on the train, I saw Pokemon, a Rubix cube and Uno cards and Kushi's mum. It felt like it was a short ride and I felt a little weird. I couldn't work out where the sound was coming from but it was all of my friends, laughing so loud!! I had an Ohio Pokemon energy and my rubix's cube was in my bag. I heard my mates laughing and cheering. I was not bored because my mates were entertaining me.
The Train Ride By Gail
I heard kids cheering with laughter as the train took off. They were telling jokes and talking about funny things. I was astonished because I don't find jokes funny normally but they were having so much fun. I had a great time watching their laughter, it made me feel good
Students have also been researching about a topic and writing Information Reports.
Chickens By Emmastacia
A chicken is a bird that does not fly and a rooster has a red beck.
A chicken looks a bit like a bird or a duck because it has feathers and short legs. The chickens are brown and light brown.
Chickens can be found at the farm and they eat corn, grass and grains.
They can also produce eggs and the eggs are to sell at the market.
