YEAR 9 JOURNALISM REPORT - CROSS COU

As part of year 9 Journalism students wrote about events around DSC please find their articles below.

Cross Country Report – Great Job Dromana!

Dromana Students performed extremely well in both the school and regional cross country races.

The cross country race is a yearly event for students at Dromana College, and involves racing over natural terrain in the open air.  It is an event that tests both physical and mental strength and runners need to build and show endurance to complete the course.

This year’s school Cross Country took place on May 9th.  Students completed a course that wound around the school and our neighbouring bushland, providing a range of terrain to challenge the runners.  Students of any age were encouraged to compete.  We had many competitors and they took the challenge seriously, with many qualifying for the next round of competition, which was at division level.

The Division cross country was held on May 25th in Hastings.  At this level, we had many competitors, parents and teachers who watched the students run.  Our first aid specialist was also there, ready to assist if needed, but there were no injuries on the day.

Students who were not competing, however, couldn’t attend as it was run during school hours, so they had to wait and hear our great results at the end of the day.  Dromana College won all sections of the Division competition! We have some great student runners. A special congratulations goes out to those students who won first place.

We look forward to more great results in next year’s competition.

CYCLING ACADEMY

Round one of Alpine Stars VICS MTB Race was run on the grounds of the Dromana Secondary College on Sunday 18th June hosted by Red Hill Riders and Dromana College Cycling Program. 250 riders from all over the state competed on the day representing their respective schools, including 24 riding for Dromana College.

A large crowd of spectators were treated to some exciting racing as categories with up to 54 riders in them competed on the wet and challenging 3.7km course which took riders through a combination of paved pathways through the school grounds over into the surrounding bush reserve and around the sports oval to a brutal final pinch climb to the finish.

The Dromana College Media Enhancement students were on hand providing music and live post-race interviews with happy but exhausted racers. They also thanked and interviewed the event support sponsors:

Rye Bike shop who had numerous bicycle mechanics on hand performing bike checks and making sure all the competitors were riding safe and roadworthy bikes.

Jig Saw Jumps who gave away one of their flat pack style jumps.

Capped Out Caps with products to bling up your bike.

Krank E-Bike Hire who provided E-Bikes on the day for the sweep riders to use in each race.

Red Hill Riders also ran a fund-raising BBQ, the proceeds going to Dromana College student Rye Carlyon who is competing at the World Championships in Glasgow in August as a part of the Australian Cycling team.

It was a fantastic event to kick off the series with several of the Dromana College students managing to finish on the Podium in the Presentations at the end of the day. Congratulations to the following Dromana College students who competed:

William Rossi, Eli Dux, Campbell Cleverdon, Oscar Barker, Tyler Easy, Fred Goodwin, River Jones, Miles Musgrave, Mason Saunders, Jarvis Avion, Peter Burns, Alex Hutchinson, Angus Leach, Angus Macarthur, Max Mangan, Cohen Nielson, Felix Waller, Kody Hedin, Cooper Jones, Tian Mugaj-Kelly, Ashtyn Williams, Wil Martin, Harry Doye, Rye Carlyon.

Congratulations to Harry Doye and Rye Carlyon of year 11. The two current Cycling Academy coaching students have been selected to represent Australia for the 2023 World Championships to be held at Scotland in August. Both Harry and Rye are the coaches for the Dromana College Cycling Program and ride for Rye Bike Shop, a strong supporter of riding in the local community.

Harry races XCO or Olympic Cross Country, which involves riding flat out for 4-5 laps of a 5-6Km course involving climbing and descending. Unfortunately, at the time of writing Harry may have to put his dreams on hold, as he recovers from a serious shoulder injury.

Rye race DH or Down Hill, which is a fast paced, gravity fed event where the rider race a technically difficult and challengingly steep course against the clock. This will be his first foray into racing in the European Alps.

We wish both students all the best in their collective endeavour's.
