Interschool Sports Finals News

On Thursday, 13th July, students from the 5/6 netball and AFL teams participated in the Noble Park District Interschool Sport Finals. Each of the teams finished in the top 2 before finals. This was the second successive year both netball teams made the finals and the first time an AFL team from St Anthony’s has made the finals in over 20 years which is an incredible achievement!

All the teams practised regularly last term with many of the students having never played the sport before!. The students trained with great enthusiasm, learning lots of new skills and showing excellent teamwork whilst having lots of fun and making new friends along the journey.

The AFL team played their semi final against Resurrection who finished top of the ladder and were undefeated in their group. Conditions were extremely difficult due to high winds throughout the game. The team kicked against the wind in the first half and whilst behind on the scoreboard at half time, 8-1, defended extremely well. We managed to kick two goals in the second half but unfortunately ended up losing 14-13. Whilst the boys were disappointed with the result, they tried their best and should be extremely proud of their amazing efforts.

The mixed netball team played their semi final against St Elizabeth’s. This team was a very skilled opposition to play against and were unbeaten coming into finals. Whilst everyone tried our best, we ended up losing 15-5. The team did an amazing job and should be very proud of making the finals.

The girls netball team also played their semi final against St Elizabeth’s. The girls played one of their best games to win 6-1 and progressed through to the Grand Final. Resurrection were their next opponents who were unbeaten before finals. It was a tough game but our defence was superb, whilst the rest of the team’s amazing efforts ensured we claimed the victory. The final score was 5-1 and as such, the girls were crowned 2023 premiers!  It’s the third year in a row at least one netball team has progressed into the Division Finals!

The Division Finals took place on Tuesday, 25th July. The girls played two games against Lyndale Greens and Springvale Rise who were very challenging opponents. Unfortunately, they lost both games but performed very well and showed great teamwork and sportsmanship throughout the day. They should be very proud of progressing this far and for the manner in which they represented the school.

All three teams are to be applauded for their commitment and engagement to their training each week and for their great teamwork and sportsmanship. They should all be extremely proud of what they achieved! Well done everyone!
