Bringing Greece to NHS

Student agency at work

Our Year 12 Classics class is currently still on online learning so Ms Wilson assigned us to create small performances of Aeschulyus “Persians” and Herodotus “Histories” to perform to her over WebEx. Instead we decided to put on a full scale performance with everyone in the class. We wrote out a professional script, had full costumes, hired out the hall with the help of Ms Foster and got backdrops and music to accompany our performance. We then called up Ms Wilson and proceeded to surprise her with our recreation of the Classical Greek theatre experience.

Addendum:

As a Classics teacher myself, this performance made my day. It was utterly inspiring to see the class bring works thousands of years old to life, and also to see such student agency and ownership of their learning in action. Their collaboration as a class throughout the remote learning period has often been remarked upon by Ms Wilson, and their performance was entirely self-directed. Their supervising teacher, myself and Ms Wilson on Webex were just able to sit back and watch as each of them played their parts and demonstrated their rich learning. A very proud moment!
