Visual & Performing Arts May Update

This term has proved an exciting one for the Visual and Performing Arts sector at Catholic Regional College Sydenham. From the 30th of April till the 4th of May, students had the opportunity to participate in various artistic activities each day of the week to celebrate “Visual and Performing Arts Week”. Some activities included a drawing lesson with the expert guidance from Arts and Studio Arts teacher, Cinzia. The students enjoyed testing their skills and learning new techniques with her help. The week also included a dance lesson on the green, hosted by a talented street choreographer. The activity proved a success, having students and teachers combine forces to demonstrate a funky and exciting dance routine. The week also included a lunch time concert on the green; another great opportunity for talented students to showcase their singing and musical talents.

The year 11 and 12 students were filled with excitement this term, presenting their production of “Daisy Pulls It Off”, performed over the course of two night, the 10th and 11th of May. The students used class time and before and after school to rehearse for the big nights, and displayed an energetic and exciting production overall.

The year 12 Studio Arts class took part in a excursion, visiting the National Gallery of Victoria’s exhibition “The Field Revisited” and Arc One Galleries “Golden Hour” to help inform the students for the work they will be completing in Unit 4, concerning conservation and curation of exhibitions.

Certificate III in Sound Production Excursion

On Thursday the 3rd of May, we traveled to Salt Studios in East Brighton. The purpose of the trip was to develop our recording techniques for our upcoming SAC, which requires us to record a demo for an artist. To test our skills, and to give us something to record, the class decided to perform Hey Soul Sister by Train. After many takes, when we finally had a clean recording, we went through both mixing and recording techniques applicable to our situation. At the end of the day, we walked out with a mixed copy of the song and a lot of useful tips, tricks and techniques that will give us the ability to get the best sound out of our recordings.

Certificate III in Music Performance

It has been a big term so far for the Music students. It is definitely heating up with performances taking place all over the school. We have had lunchtime concerts, class performances, after-hours performances and more. The year 1 Music students have had their first public performance, having their acoustic performance night on May 23 in the Crate. It was great to see students performing in their groups and to such a high standard. The year 2 Music students are also completing performances at a fast rate, all aiming to complete three 25 minute performances throughout the year. We have had performances in Manna at lunchtime as well as a showcase on May 17 in the Crate. As well as these, students have had a number of workshops and feedback sessions with VCE VET assessors David Santamaria and Michael Flaherty. Students will continue working on these performances for the rest of the year. Stay tuned for more performance dates coming up in Term 3.
