Fundraising

Over 2 weeks during Term 1,  students organised many fun and interactive fundraising ideas for our friends at Mallacoota P-12 school.

Pancake Day, Bake Sales, Sausage sizzle, Teacher Auction, Movie Night and much more.

Well done for an amazing team effort and for all the extra time students put into it.

Here is a little montage of the fortnight.

Plastic Oceans Australia

Hello! For those who don’t know us we are the JMSS Plastic Oceans Association, a student-run organisation, meeting every Thursday lunchtime in Flannery house. Our aim is to remove and reduce plastic waste, discuss marine pollution and promote sustainability within the local community. We have a large group of volunteers who are all very passionate about the work we are doing and are always looking for ideas, so feel free to drop by to make suggestions.

Plastic Oceans Australasia is an awareness program based in Melbourne with the mission of educating society about what ‘disposable’ really means. POA promotes the conservation and protection of the physical and natural environment in a number of ways. We raise public awareness, support environmental solutions and provide educational resources about the protection of our natural environment.

We at ‘POA Students’ work hard in order to improve how plastic is used in JMSS and try to reduce its use as much as possible.  As a general example, we encourage using reusable food containers instead of single-use plastic containers and bags. We at JMSS are part of #poaschoolchallenge. The challenge tasks us with eliminating the use of single-use plastics at school.

‘POA Students’ has a range of ideas as to what can be done in order to improve not only how the world’s oceans are treated, but also how the public sees plastic management in such a plastic reliant world. Over the course of the year, we hope to not only spread awareness and prevent future plastic contamination in oceans but create contacts and grow the organisation and its community. Currently, there are several other schools participating in the POA Students movement such as the Australian Science and Mathematics School (South Australia), the Queensland Academy for Science, Mathematics and Technology (Queensland). We hope to create long-lasting connections with even more schools in the future in order to receive opinions and different points of view from people in many different situations across the country and increase the amount of impact and influence we can have on the current situation.

Both ourselves and Plastic Oceans Australia value the input of the community to help with projects and raising awareness. If you wish to contact us or the organisation there are a few ways to do so. To directly contact Plastic Oceans Australia please go to the contact page on their website and email Ricki Hersburgh at info@plasticoceans.org.au. If you have information, questions or opinions that you believe are more suited for us then please contact us at (poastudents.australia@gmail.com) and we will be sure to get back to you as quickly as possible. Be sure to also follow our Instagram page @poa_students for updates from our dedicated media team on group initiatives and news.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Fresh Air!

Amongst all the chaos of the world we thought a change of scenery and some fresh air were in order! Students enjoyed the extra freedom of exploring the other side of the schools building and all that it offered.

Gratitude Cards

Art captains and students have created some wonderful "Gratitude cards" to disperse amongst their peers in their mentor groups.

The idea is to write a little note or message to someone in your group you would like to give thanks to. Creating some fun and kindness in these often uncertain times.

Music Soiree

On Thursday the 19th of March, JMSS had its first VCE music soirée of the year.

Parents and friends were invited to the Music House to watch and listen to some of our extremely talented musicians perform songs they are preparing for their VCE performances.

Students performed a range of songs and styles from classical violin, viola, and double bass to modern soul vocals. The JMSS jazz choir also performed to the delight of attendees.

We are looking forward to our next set of concerts and soirées later in the year, stay tuned!
