Anzac Day, 25 April, is one of Australia’s most important national occasions.  It's a time for the community to come together to remember and recognise the service, and sacrifice of members of the Australian Defence Force.  Originally a commemoration for the landing of the Australian and New Zealand forces at Gallipoli on  25 April 1915, Anzac Day is a public expression of gratitude and reflection that resonates to the present day.

Despite a cold start to the day, our Senior School Leaders accompanied by Mrs Frame, represented Oakleigh Grammar at the Dawn Service in Oakleigh on ANZAC Day.  Students also laid a wreath on behalf of our school community.

Selected SRC members and Middle School Leaders had the privilege of attending and taking part in the ANZAC Day Parade on Thursday 25 April. Our students marched down St Kilda Road, concluding at the Shrine.  It was a very emotional experienced for our students attending this big event and having the opportunity to be around thousands of veterans and current serving personnel.  After the parade, the students visited the Hellenic RSL and joined the members there for lunch.

Congratulations to all students who took part in the 104th commemoration anniversary of Anzac Day.

Oakleigh Grammar students always have the opportunity to extend their knowledge on each subject by taking part in different activities.

Students who are undertaking Unit 1 Greek participated in an Open Forum hosted by the well-known Historian, Dr. Peter Ewer, titled “The ANZAC involvement in Greece and Crete during WWII”. The discussion took place on Monday 6th of May during our lesson. Dr. Ewer and students discussed the significant involvement of Anzacs during WWII in Greece. Students were also very excited to share some of their family’s stories in relation to topic, which they have heard from their grandparents.

On behalf of Oakleigh Grammar, we would like to thank Dr. Peter Ewer for his presentation and for giving the opportunity to our students to learn about the significant friendship that was developed between Greece and Australia during WWII. In addition, a huge thank to Mr Tony Tsourdalakis, President of the Battle of Crete and Greece Commemorative Council, for his contribution to this special incursion.

Every year, students of Oakleigh Grammar have the privilege to be invited to a number of events organised by different Greek organisations. This is a great opportunity for our students to be involved in these occasions, meet new people and represent our School with pride.

On the first Sunday of our school holidays, selected SRC members and Middle School Leaders gave up their own time to represent our School at a very significant event. On Sunday 7th of April, Justice of Cyprus Committee invited students of Oakleigh Grammar to attend the 64th Anniversary of the struggle of Cypriots to gain freedom from the British Colony. The service took place at St Andrews Greek Orthodox Church in Forest Hill. After the liturgy, a Doxology at the monument next to church was contacted for those who lost their lives. Zena Makantasis and Stephanie Burnett laid a wreath at the Memorial on behalf of Oakleigh Grammar.

A special excursion took place on Tuesday 7th of May. The students of Mrs Spanos’ Greek Year 6 class had the opportunity of visiting and celebrating Greek Easter with the residences of Wesley St Mark’s Respite Cottage. Students started their performance by singing the Easter Hymn “Chris Has Risen” in Greek and in English, followed by some Greek songs and some traditional Greek dances. At the end of their excursion students had the opportunity to extend Easter wishes to the elderly people. Well done to Year 6 students for their outstanding performance.

Oakleigh Grammar was invited to attend the 78th Battle of Kalamata on Sunday 5th of May. This commemoration service was in honour of those who fought and died in the defense of Greece during WWII. Representatives from our School community attended the event and a wreath was laid on behalf of our Principal, Mr Mark Robertson.

I would like to extend my congratulations to all Oakleigh Grammar students who took the time and represent our School Community to these significant events.
