Senior School

SHARRON FRAME

Head of Senior School

Working with senior students means I get to see the very best of them as they grow and develop into individuals ready for life after school. They all grow at different rates and use different strategies to cope with what comes their way. No two are alike. Similar? Yes, but there is always a point of difference which makes them unique.

Whilst, the care they display for each other is sometimes very touching to witness, the disregard for others at other times is not. As students move through school, relationships change because people change. Personal situations can impact on interactions with others. Understanding and polite recognition of those around them is a key life skill each student needs to have in order to move forward through life. Taking a moment to check on someone and offering help, if needed, in a kind and caring way, is the first step to approaching someone else in a positive manner. Not only does it open up dialogue, it also commences the path to understanding another. Actions need to be positive and meaningful if they are to have value.

I would like to recognise the positive actions of students in the Senior School in this issue of the Grammar News.

The Mother’s Day Classic

On Sunday May 12th, a group of 16 girls and nine staff will participate in the 4 km walk at the Mother’s Day Classic, to raise funds for Breast Cancer research. This cause is one that has been supported by Year 11 students for a number of years. As a School we all know women, staff and family members within our community who have been touched by this disease. The ongoing research into its prevention and cure has meant a positive outcome for many. But for some it has not, and so participating in this event is important and very personal. The students can be supported by donations to our fundraising page here.

Fundraising Sausage Sizzle

Not everyone could participate in the Mother’s Day Classic, so those that could not, volunteered their time or made contributions to the sausage sizzle that took place for Middle and Senior School students on Monday May 6th. All funds raised will be donated to support the Mother’s Day Classic fundraising page. As you can see in the photos, they worked tirelessly in preparation and cooking.

ANZAC Day Dawn Service

The Senior School leaders joined the Head of Senior School for an early 5.45 am start on ANZAC Day. They arrived in full uniform to represent the School Community at the Dawn Service. As a group, they moved together to lay a wreath at the Cenotaph in Oakleigh on behalf of the School.

This year ANZAC Day occurred in a busy week for those celebrating Orthodox Easter. But still they came. They understood the importance of remembering those who had sacrificed their lives for us to live as we do today.

A Small Kindness

This was witnessed by all who attended the commencement assembly on Wednesday May 1st. However, only a few people knew of the kind and caring action taken by our School Captain, Vasiliki Tamvarkis. Without preparation or concern, she stepped in at the very last minute to read a passage in the assembly for a younger student stressed and overcome by the situation. Well done Vasiliki.

VCE Mathematics Tutoring

Each Monday, tutoring will be available for VCE Mathematics students. Classes will be held in Room 209, and current VCE Mathematics teachers will be available to assist students.

Practice Mini GAT

Students undertaking the completion of VCE 3/4 subjects in 2019 are required to attempt the VCAA GAT on Wednesday June 12th. To prepare our students, a practice mini GAT will take place on Tuesday May 14th in the Conference Centre from 3.30 pm to 5.30 pm. This is compulsory for all assessed students in Year 11 and 12 to attend. Examination papers will be marked externally by an experienced VCAA GAT marker, and results returned to students before the GAT examination in June.

National School Event

The team, comprised of mainly Year 10 to 12 students, departed for Adelaide on Tuesday May 7th. Good luck and our best wishes for success in each of the competitions.
