ANZAC Day Commemorations
The annual ANZAC Day Commemoration Assembly was held last week and involved all students from Prep - Year 12. Our special guest was Major Filip Likar, the Vice-President of the Oakleigh – Carnegie RSL, who spoke about the cultural importance of ANZAC Day.
The service was also enhanced by the involvement of several students who shared reflections, poems and reports, provided leadership in the formal parts of the ceremonies, or were soloists accompanying Year 5 singing.
Across the week students and staff were also represented in a number of events including accompanying the Hellenic RSL in the main Melbourne ANZAC Day March, and attending the Oakleigh-Carnegie RSL Dawn Service, and the combined City of Monash School’s ANZAC Day Service. On all occasions our students were excellent ambassadors for their School.
I would like to share one of the students’ poems: Mason Jansz (Year 5):
Guns are firing
Soldiers dying
Families crying
I hear bombs booming, Australia glooming
Bravery runs through their veins
While they soldier on through the rain.
As they run to the beach,
They wonder if victory is out of reach.
Thousands of bullets fly,
I see bombs falling out of the sky
Many solders lost their lives
So our freedom could survive.
National Schools Event
Over the past three days, 49 students and five staff have been involved in the National Schools Event in Adelaide. This is a sporting and cultural event overseen by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia, and brings together students from across Australia. Father George and Mr Robertson were also in attendance, and no doubt cheering our students on in good voice.
Staff News
We were delighted to receive news last week that Hannah Peace has given birth to a baby daughter, Matilda Ivy. We congratulate Hannah and Brett and wish Matilda a very happy, healthy, blessed life.
Mother's Day Celebrations
It was great to see many of our mums, special friends and grandmothers enjoying the various activities in the Junior School this morning and, from all reports, the High Tea organised by the Parents' Association was a successful event too.
Together with a number of our Year 11 students and Senior School teachers, I will be walking in the Mother’s Day Classic on Sunday. I would like to wish all our mothers a wonderful day on Sunday. I trust that you are all appropriately spoilt.
