Resilient Learners

We have started our School Wide Positive Behaviour Support lessons in class.  This term we are focusing on our school value RESILIENCE. Students have participated in activities that aims to develop their understanding of resilience and how they can become resilient learners and students.  A few words that have helped us to understand are: Never Giving Up and Bouncing Back!  We've explored areas of our school where we need to be more resilient eg: the playground when things don't go our way.  We've looked at areas of our learning such as reading, spelling and maths that become tricky and how we don't just give up.  And finally we've explored every day situations in life where problems come up and we can actually work through our problems or seek the help of our peers to fix these problems as they arise.  We are now using the word 'resilient' consistently across our school as we aim to create a positive and resilient climate for learning at Kilsyth.

WALT

We Are Learning To.... we've been busy this term continuing with our daily literacy focus including, synthetic phonics, reading tasks, reading groups, writing and spelling! Every day students have been using cued articulation to produce the phonemes s,m,c,t,g,p,a,o and now we are focusing on r,l,b,d,f,h,i,u.  With knowledge of these sounds we are beginning to read words fast and read more words! Daily practise of our golden words has seen many students move faster through their words to the next level - awesome! Thanks to all our families for their efforts with regular home practise. This routine is crucial to student growth and confidence. This is only a snapshot of some of our little word wizards!

Part of our reading program has included a comprehension focus and teaching predictions of text.  Students have thoroughly enjoyed developing their vocabulary through verbalising thoughts and ideas of what they think will happen within a text.

Book talk is an important part of reading. At home with your child, chat about the book before, during and after reading and really encourage your child to talk about their ideas and ask questions about the book. Prediction questions include:

What do you predict the story to be about?

What do you predict will happen to the character?

What do you predict will happen next?

What do you predict from this picture?

What do you predict will happen at the end?

Tech Tuesday

Every Tuesday we participate in tasks that focus on a particular area of digital technology.  This week we've explored an online app (Street Sounds) that reinforce our street safety message.  Next week we will be exploring Tux Paint which is a literacy drawing program. This will fit in well with our book fair where students can create illustrations from their favourite books. Stay tuned for photos and some Seesaw uploads!

Uniform

All of us have made a great impression with our school uniform! Our students look fantastic as they wear their uniform with pride.  We have noticed a few students forgetting to wear correct uniform items.  Please don't forget to CLEARLY NAME your child's jumpers and other items as when they accidentally leave them at school or misplace them, they are easily returned to your child.  With the change in weather we know jumpers are needed in the mornings.  Now that we no longer need to wear hats, if it's easier for you we can keep them at school in a safe place until the sunny months return in Term3 - the beginning of September.

Book Fair

We have been down to the Book Fair and checked out all the wonderful books! We would love it if our families could come and check it out too!  We have had Clifford come to promote the fair and didn't our students love Clifford!

Excursion

Please continue to return your payment and permission for our upcoming excursion to Kew Traffic School.  Please remember that students will need to bring a helmet for this excursion.  If you don't have, that's fine, please don't purchase one just come and let me know.  Parent helpers are welcome on this excursion.  Kew Traffic School encourages parents to come and help share the knowledge of Road Safety.

Twilight Session

Thanks so much to all our wonderful families who supported our Twilight Session!  It was so lovely to see so many of our students stay for the whole duration and get the enjoyment from being at school in the DARK!  What a great community feel there was when our families joined us for the final break time and our PMP session.  You know you are welcome to visit us in class anytime! Thanks again for being a part of this special day.  Without a doubt, a highlight was the sausage for dinner!
