In Term 2, Grade 4 will be learning about the following topics and skills.
English:
Students will be learning about imaginative texts through the novel ‘The Legend of Podkin One-Ear'. They will explore direct and indirect speech, text structures and language features. The students will have the opportunity to read and discuss both digital and print texts. After this, students will compare and contrast texts and news features from recent times to earlier times. Students will build their writing skills by writing their own imaginative and informative texts. They will be encouraged to use their knowledge of simple, compound and complex sentences in their pieces. They will also be developing their cursive handwriting.
Mathematics:
In Mathematics students will be learning about symmetrical patterns and how to identify and create symmetry. Students will learn about the key features of maps and how to read and use maps to find specific locations. They will learn about chance and how likely everyday events are to occur, as well as what can influence the chance of events occurring. After this, students will investigate 2D and 3D shapes, exploring how they relate to each other and how to measure the area and size of both. To finish they will compare the effectiveness of different methods of data collection. They will also evaluate suitable methods of presenting data and which method is more effective for which type of data.
Science:
Students will learn about how all living species in an ecosystem are interdependent and interconnected. Students will explore the food chains of various animals. They will learn about changes to the environment due to natural occurrences as well as the actions of people. Students will culminate their learning with an investigation into a specific environmental issue and create a presentation on their own solution to it.
Humanities:
Students will be learning about the topics of Remembrance, Community and Celebrations. In the Remembrance topic students will be exploring the significance of specific days in Australia, such as ANZAC Day. In the topic of Community, students will learn about significant examples of change in Melbourne over time, including what life was like during the European settlement of Australia and the events that occurred. In the topic of Celebrations, the significance of celebrations and commemorations in other places around the world will be explored.
Circle Solutions:
Students will be learning about appropriately expressing their emotions in different social situations. They will also learn how to use persistence and adaptation to overcome challenging situations and change. The students will be discussing physical, social and emotional changes that occur as they grow older. After this, they will identify and explore factors that can positively influence relationships and personal well-being. Finally, the students will explain the role of cultural traditions in the development of personal, group and national identities.
