Grade 3

Explore the learning on Level 3, our rainforest floor...

In Term 2, Grade 3 will be learning about the following topics and skills. 

 

English

Students will learn to write informative texts about animals. They will learn to identify key facts as they explore the five groups of vertebrates and classify animals into groups based on their characteristics. After this, students will be introduced to the classic children’s text ‘Wind in the Willows’. They will continue their comprehension development by answering literal, inferential and evaluative questions to support them in thinking critically and creatively.  

 

Mathematics

Students will continue to practice the four operations, with a focus on multiplication. They will continue to explore the three strands of Mathematics. In Number and Algebra, students will focus on fractions, worded problems and number patterns. In Measurement and Geometry, they will learn about symmetry and concepts of location, including reading grid maps and transformations. Finally, in Statistics and Probability, students will focus on chance experiments and probability-related language.

 

Science

Students will be learning about life cycles, traits and variations in plants and animals. They will explore how different plants and animals change over their lifetimes. Students will each plant a seed and observe its growth throughout the unit. They will study traits in plants and animals and identify their connection to survival and the environment. At the end of the unit, students will review their learning and present their plant’s growth to the class.

 

Humanities

Throughout the term, students will be exploring the topic of First Contact. In this topic students will learn about Captain Cook’s first voyage, The First Fleet and the impact of settlement on the First Peoples of Australia. Students will explore the culture and traditions of the First Peoples of Australia including the importance of country to Indigenous Australians. Students will develop their understanding of key events in Australian history from the perspective of both European Settlers and Indigenous Australians.  

 

Circle Solutions

Students will explore strategies to regulate their emotions as they experience changes in life. They will also continue to learn about the Zones of Regulation and the importance of having a growth mindset. Finally, students will explore how to identify and practise strategies to promote health, safety and wellbeing.
