In Term 2, Grade 2 will be learning about the following topics and skills.
English
Students will be learning about cycles in nature, including seasonal cycles, plant and animal cycles and the water cycle. They will explore non-fiction texts about these cycles, followed by poems about nature. After this, students will be learning about insects, particularly bees and ants. Students will build their writing skills by expanding their sentences about these insects.
Mathematics
Students will continue to explore the place value of three-digit numbers. They will learn subtraction strategies and understand the link between addition and subtraction. Students will explore informal units for measuring length and mass. They will develop their understanding of money by recognising, counting and ordering Australian coins and notes. Students will explore halves, quarters and eighths when learning about fractions.
Science
Students will be learning about plants and animals and the variety of habitats they live in. They will investigate what plants need to survive and explore ways animals and plants depend on each other. Students will participate in hands on learning experiences to explore these concepts.
Humanities
Students will explore the geography of India, the Ganges and the Indus rivers, and the development of the first civilisation in the Indus Valley, where modern day western India, Pakistan and north-eastern Afghanistan are located. They will also engage in Indian tales and stories through retell and the use of puppets.
Circle Solutions
Students will explore the concept of change in Circle Solutions lessons. They will discuss what it feels like when faced with a challenge and strategies to use during these times. Students will participate in classroom discussions, where they will take turns speaking and listening to others. They will discuss how their body changes as they get older (e.g. teeth falling out) and list activities they can do to stay fit and healthy.
