Grade 1

Explore the learning on Level 2, our desert floor...

In Term 2, Grade 1 students will be learning about the following topics and skills:

English

Grade 1 students will continue to practise and develop their fluency, vocabulary and phonological skills in English in Term 2. Students will learn to read texts smoothly and to sound out tricky words using their phonics strategies. They will be exploring a number of fiction and non-fiction texts related to animals, habitats and the history of the Earth. Students will learn to write facts about different animals and places and will use adjectives and conjunctions to add detail to their writing.

Mathematics

Grade 1 students will further develop their skills in Numbers and Algebra through learning 2-digit numbers, place value and number operations. They will learn more about recognising and describing 2D and 3D shapes through hands-on experiences and use the knowledge to explore halves and patterns. They will also learn how to give and follow directions with peers. Grade 1 students will learn how to ask questions to collect data and use different ways to represent data sets.

Science

Grade 1 students will explore the topic of plant and animal survival in Term 2. They will identify the physical and behavioural traits of plants and animals for their survival. The learning in this unit will allow students to apply their knowledge to determine how an animal rehab agency imitates nature to help animals survive.

Humanities

Students will be exploring two topics in Term 2. We will begin by exploring the meaning of community, the special places within our community, and how they can be cared for. We will discover the different roles of community members with a visit from the South Melbourne Fire Brigade. In the second half of the term, we will discover how the world has changed throughout the generations with each student interviewing a special adult in their lives.

Circle Solutions

In Term 2, students will continue to develop their social and emotional skills in Circle Solutions lessons. We will be teaching the students skills to build and retain positive relationships and to identify and regulate their emotions. Students will learn calming down strategies including yoga, meditation and breathing exercises.
