Grade Prep

Explore the learning on Level 5, our sunshine floor...

In Term 2, Grade Prep will be learning about the following topics and skills.

Phonics

Students will consolidate their learning of all Phase 2 sounds through a range of review sessions. This will enhance students' ability to read simple words and understand the difference between a grapheme and phoneme before progressing to Phase 3. During Phase 3 students will learn digraphs (2 letters making one sound) and begin to explore some trigraphs (3 letters making one sound) sounds. Students will be supported through this process with Seesaw videos and daily in-school practice.

English

Students will be learning about plants and farms as part of our larger exploration of living things. Students will acquire a fundamental understanding of the parts of plants and how they grow. They will learn what plants need in order to stay alive and will be introduced to the concept of life cycles. Within our Farms unit, students will learn about farm animals as well as common crops that farmers grow. The Farms unit features informational texts presented through a fictional narrator, Old MacDonald, and develop their understanding of the purposes and features of different text types.

Maths

Students will continue to build on their number awareness skills from Term 1. This will involve counting, representing, comparing and ordering numbers to 20 and beyond. They will use a range of mathematical language including most, least, before and after. Students will be introduced to early concepts of addition, subtraction and sharing. They will also develop their knowledge of measurement concepts including length, mass and time. Students will investigate the properties of 2-dimentional and 3-dimentional shapes and create simple shape and number patterns. Finally, Preps will also be introduced to the early concepts of financial transactions through “shop play” with money.

Science

Students will begin their exploration of living things. Students will learn that all living things need resources from their environment and that they live in habitats that contain the things they need to survive, including food, water and shelter. Students will describe the needs of plants and animals and their relationship with the local habitat as well as identify ways landscapes can be transformed into a habitat for plants and animals. Students will participate in guided investigations and develop their science inquiry skills including questioning, predicting, recording and communicating their findings.

Humanities

Students will build their understanding of the local community they, and others, belong to. We will investigate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Country on which the school is located as well as the location and features of natural and constructed places. We will also consider the general location of students’ homes in relation to school and discuss special people that contribute to a thriving community.

Circle Solutions

Through two weekly sessions students will work to build deep connections within the class and develop an understanding of safe play and the Zones of Regulation.  As students transition to the forecourt for play there will be an importance put on safe play at South Melbourne Primary School and providing students with problem-solving skills. In conjunction with the Zones of Regulation, students learn what different emotions are and are provided the skills to articulate their feelings and thoughts in a safe and nurturing environment.

Passion Projects

Passion Projects is a time for students to exercise their voice and connect with their peers and teacher in a fun, purposeful environment. As highlighted and selected by the students for Term 2 they will explore Science in a hands-on way with a range of mini experiments with three Passion Project lessons in the term. This will include a range of science activities that will allow for students to develop their knowledge and love for science. We are excited to turn Prep Land into a Science Lab for our Passion Project session this term.

We are looking forward to a term full of learning, development and fun with our Prep students.
