Dear Parents and Carers
As part of our goal to improve the quality of instruction and outcomes in mathematics, we have been using a strategy called Number Talks in our classrooms. Number Talks allows students to engage in rich dialogue in the classrooms and provide reasons and justifications for their answers.
A very important skill to develop in children for mathematics is reasoning and estimation. These skills can be developed through interesting activities and conversations with children so as to develop a love and joy for the subject. Please find below such activities for you to trial with your child. Use the clues to prompt your child to explain their thinking, give reasons and most importantly engage in the messiness of learning with your child.
The idea is to have fun and solve problems together while developing a love for mathematics.
