He Made his Mark

Mark Ryan (SVC 1976-84)

The name Mark Ryan (SVC 1976-84) is synonymous with Tassal – the Tasmanian salmon farming operator.

Mark has been Managing Director/CEO of Tassal since 2005. Upon leaving SVC Mark went on to University of Tasmania where he gained a Bachelor of Commerce degree. In June 2002 Mark was appointed administrator of the then-struggling aquaculture firm.  He chose to stay on and listed the firm on the stock exchange the following year. The share value initially was about 5o cents.

Today Tassal employs 1 700 people across its Tasmanian and mainland farming operations that produce Atlantic salmon and black tiger prawns for domestic and export markets.

On August 15 it was announced that Canadian seafood giant Cooke has won over the board of Tassal with a $1.1B bid.

Mark is a board member of AFL Tasmania, Salmon Enterprise Tasmania Pty Ltd, Food Industry Council of Tasmania and the National Aquaculture Council. He is also a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
