Senior School

From the Head of Senior School

With the vast array of student pathways on offer at Great Southern Grammar, being a Head of Boarding House supporting students in the Senior School has never been so vibrant. Ensuring academic support for students preparing for their Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessments (OLNA) to students working on a Specialist Mathematics assignment, to students catching up on schoolwork because they have been at TAFE or the workplace is just one area of focus. Striving to find a mix of engaging recreation activities is another.

The magic happens underneath all of this; the relationships built and the culture created are special. Being a significant part of the journey from childhood to adulthood, understanding and developing each individual is amazing to watch. I admire the work our Head of Boarding Houses do and the outcomes they achieve.

Along with the flexible options available at the day school, we now have a variety of options available in the boarding school. As well as our full-time boarders, we have a number of students who board during the week only and students who board for perhaps just two nights per week. We also have students who board for short spells.

Fraser Allison in Year Eleven recently spent five weeks in boarding while his parents were away. He reported: “It was a really good experience. I was made welcome, the food was great and I got all my work done. I really liked the social side and all the activities. Mr. Colton makes an effort to get to know us but also teaches us to know ourselves better so that we can grow as young men. I felt cared for, the culture in boarding is really good.”

Now that Spirit of Grammar scholarships are available to boarding students, I look forward to more students joining us!

VACS - Arts

Yesterday marked the culmination of six weeks of Senior School VACS - Arts, with a showcase to end all showcases.

Each House pumped out the music in a stand-out Battle of the Bands with Camfield narrowly pipping Baudin to take the glory and title of "Best House Band" for 2022.

We then had the privilege to listen to the Year Twelve team argue that "The death penalty has no place in the modern world". Unfortunately for them, the Year Ten team's argument blew them out of the water. And, as much as Dr Watson as adjudicator would rather disagree, he had to admit that the negative team's arguments were stronger and therefore, gave the Year Ten team the win.

A huge congratulations to all participants in all the VACS - Arts sessions this term.
